Poodle Story: Chapter 1 “Johnny….Johnny…. Johnny!” “We really don’t have much time, the tradesman will be here in five minutes.” I awoke to the ghostly stillness of our little hideaway, a small cave of safety in an otherwise hostile environment. I could still hear the sound of the beasts outside, faintly, guttural screeches from fauna that should not possibly exist. “Do we have enough gold to actually haggle with him?” I said to my brother Franklin. “We gave him most of what we had last night, just to get enough for one meal.” “Well… let’s just see what we can find,” said Franklin. “look under all the rocks, and check next to the fire as well.” We managed to find around 6 gold coins, barely enough for scraps…. Crunch! Franklin and I jumped as a figure approached our cave, large enough to block out all the dreary red light coming through the cave entrance, yet stepping light enough as to not grab the attention of the beasts nearby. “Do you have any gold?” whispered the tradesman, in a foul voice that would make even the blackest night quiver in fear. He had arms that were thin and bony, draped at his sides and ending well past his knees. The tradesman himself stood nearly seven feet tall, unnatural, inhuman. I frantically handed the 6 gold coins to Franklin and whispered, “Get what you can.” Franklin stepped out of the cave to haggle with the tradesman, while I sat down next to the fire and wondered if we would be able to eat tonight after all. After minutes of hearing the faint growling speech of the tradesman and Franklin haggling, he finally came back inside, and sat down next to me by the fire. The tradesman left almost without a sound and we both breathed a huge sigh of relief. “I wasn’t able to get much…” said Franklin. “It gave me just one leg of meat from one of the beasts, and a couple grapes. Here, you can have the grapes, I will eat the leg.” And so franklin and I sat by the fire that night and ate the food we had obtained. I was ok with him getting the leg and me the grapes, after all, he was a lot bigger than me and we would both need our strength in the morning to go out and gather supplies. After we ate, we let the fire die out. We laid down on our beds made of leaves and other foliage and tried our best to block out the noise from outside. You would think we were used to it by now, but it’s the kind of thing that is hard to get used to. “Franklin, do you think we will ever make it out of this place?” I said. ….”Goodnight Johnny,” said Franklin.

Chapter 2 👇
Poodle Story: Chapter 2 “Do we have everything we need?” asked Franklin. “Lets see… I’ve got our canteen, the axe, some rocks… yep, I have all of it!” I said as I zipped up the backpack. “Great, let’s try and be quicker than we were last night Johnny. I don’t wanna be caught outside at sunset again.” He was right, the beasts that are native to these vile lands are nocturnal. We might not have made it back in time to avoid them if we had stayed out any longer. I slipped my backpack on and braced myself, it was time to head out for supplies. We stepped out of the mouth of our cave, and the familiar blighted land was just as it had always been. There were dead gnarled growths plastered across the land, swamps filled with foul black liquid cutting through in a jagged manner, and a foul stench to match the look of the place. They say that long ago, there was a war like nothing the world had ever seen. The Poodle Empire faced off against a terrible lich, who commanded an army just as terrible. Their war is what created the scar in this land, which is where we were headed to right now. “Ok, this tree should do the trick, let me see the axe,” said Franklin. “Here.” I passed the axe to Franklin and watched as he slowly chopped off branches to make firewood. These trees may be dead but it still takes a few hours to get enough wood to last the night. I loaded the wood into the backpack and we set off towards the scar. As crazy as it sounds, the edge of the scar is the only place where you can find clean water to drink around here. “Haha, remember about a week ago when you almost fell into one of the swamps?” said Franklin. “I don’t really see what’s funny about that, I could have died!” I said rather annoyed. “Don’t be a big fat baby, it was a little funny,” said Franklin. “I’m not a big fat baby!” “Whatever… we’re here, let’s get our water and get the heck out of here.” There it was in all its rotten splendor, a massive, miles wide gash cutting through the land. The same black liquid that filled the swamps pooled at the bottom with streaks of red and purple swirling throughout. At the top? A small natural spring flowing with the only source of clean water. “Hurry up Johnny, pass me the backpack and I will fill the canteen.” I passed Franklin the backpack and then watched as he filled up the canteen, placing it in the backpack along with all of our supplies. “We have a couple hours of light left, I guess we ought to head back now,” I said. “Yeah.” Just then a terrible guttural screech sounded from the forest. It sounded like the cry of 100 different animals all blended together, wailing in agony. Scared half to death, Franklin lost his balance, sending our backpack of supplies hurtling down into the scar, landing on a small ledge just above where the black liquid was pooling. “Noooooo!” screamed Franklin. “that was our only hope of surviving the night!” I sat down and stared blankly, hardly able to believe what had just happened. This was it wasn’t it? This was the end for us.

Stages of a Multiplanetary Economy, Part 3/3: Symbiosis 1234 years later. After long enough time has passed, let’s assume that the people of Earth have largely settled their differences, war becoming a thing of the past. Both planets are now working together as one, striving for a better future for all. Governance on Mars will greenlight turning the moons of Mars into datacenter moons. Far more heat efficient computation, combined with the natural coldness of the satellites, will make this a natural choice. These datacenters will be running AI capable of essentially anything, something like… overseeing the mining of asteroids and the construction of outposts and scientific tools deeper into the solar system. Just like during the industrial revolution, mining and construction will absolutely dominate the economy. The orbital mechanics will be worked out for the entire solar system, making travel by autonomous agents trivial. There may even be a true pooling of knowledge and resources acting as one unit, making growth and development as efficient as possible. It will purely be a matter of budgeting energy and materials. All of this growth will ultimately be for gaining a much deeper understanding of the laws governing reality. Hundreds of new instruments of measurement, telescopes that dwarf anything we can conceive of today, particle accelerators built across entire worlds. All being funneled into AI systems that parse the data and assist in finding meaning in all of it. What happens next is hard to say, whether we ultimately decide to expand into the stars, or compress deeper and become more efficient. We will thrive.

Part 2 👇
Stages of a Multiplanetary Economy, Part 2/3: Sufficiency 222 years later The initial Martian colonies will mostly be made up of scientists, engineers, doctors, etc, and after almost 2 centuries their economy will look vastly different to ours. Technological breakthroughs will be commonplace, perhaps with advancements that go far beyond anything that Earth has, some of this will pay for any number of materials that cannot be sourced locally. Just like when the 13 colonies separated from Britain, Martians may not really pay too much mind of the wishes and regulations of the Earth, they will have their own new governance system that they follow. At this point there will be at least a few million people living on Mars and they will for the most part be self sufficient, however Mars will need to have trade deals in place with Earth to get the materials it still needs, in addition to mining resources from asteroids. The local markets will most likely not be covered in Starbucks, or McDonald’s, there will be in home solutions for that sort of thing, instead it will be geared more towards social life, the arts, and things we cannot even imagine at the moment, some of their new creations will also become staple exports. 222 years later They will be Martians
