This lesson, you could only give it if you were the first to give up something important. And I gave up a lot. I was 28, I was halfway through my career, I had just won the World Cup and I gave up a chance to win a Ballon d'Or by agreeing to play in Serie B.
My decision to stay was the opportunity to send a strong message to all the children who have this passion for football.
If I had made another decision, a lot of things would have changed. But at that time, I had the certainty that by acting well, with generosity towards others, life would give me back everything.
If I am here today, at almost 45 years old, it is because of this choice made 17 years ago."
