My wife's brother spent six years at a Japanese car plant in Kentucky. He was sent to teach the Americans our way of working.
He came home with a notebook. On the cover, in Japanese: "Things I Learned Instead."
Some pages:
"The first day of deer season, half the line takes vacation. HR plans for it every year. Nobody pretends to be sick. They just say 'deer season.'"
"They name the machines. The welding robot on Line 2 is Darlene. Darlene gets a birthday cake."
"When someone's wife has a baby, the whole line signs a card. The card is bigger than the baby."
"A man with thirty years on the line showed me a better way to do my own job. Then he said, 'Don't tell your boss I told you that, boss.'"
"Every Friday, someone brings doughnuts. Nobody is assigned. Somebody always does."
"They thank the janitor by name. Every day. His name is Curtis."
The last page is from his final day.
In our system, anyone can stop the line, but only for a problem. Stopping it is serious.
"On my last day, the line stopped for one minute. There was no problem. They stopped it to shake my hand."
He says it's the only time in six years he was happy to see the line stop.

One of my nuclear mentors recounts how he arrived at a cornfield in LaSalle County, Illinois and left it with a couple of gigawatts. That was the 1970s.
I wondered if I'd ever get to actually do something like that.
In Lewis County, Kentucky it'll be soybeans to six gigawatts. – at Kentucky, USA

The Nuclear Company CEO @JonathanWebbKY reveals why Kentucky coal country beat 1,500 other sites for a massive 6.6 GW nuclear project:
"This is our beautiful campus of Prosperity One, about 4,000 acres on the Ohio River."
"Growing up in a coal state, seeing a lot of the coal plants shut down, we got a need for power in the region. Behind me, there’s the 765 kV line. It’s the largest transmission line in the country, and it connects us to PJM, which is the entire Northeast. And the Ohio River’s got about six times the amount of water we would need for the reactors."
"We’ve looked at about a dozen states, met with governors, and looked at about 1,500 properties. Today’s the day that we’ve officially announced the project to the world."

The Nuclear Company CEO @JonathanWebbKY warns China is winning the nuclear race:
"I wanna be clear to everyone in nuclear that might be listening, you’re a friend, you’re an ally. We got one competitor and it’s China, and they’re winning."
"This country is gonna build micro, it’s gonna build small, and it’s gonna build large reactors. This site is gonna show the world that we can build big things again, and we can cut costs, we can cut schedule. We won’t compromise on quality or safety."
"We will have teams of men and women actively out on this site starting next week doing confirmatory analysis. CSX rail runs to the Port of Norfolk, getting ready for all the materials that’ll be coming in on the rail and on the barge."
"We wanna partner with the nuclear community and show the world that not only China can deploy gigawatts of nuclear. We can do it in the US and we’re gonna do it right here in Eastern Kentucky."

The Nuclear Company is proposing a large nuclear plant in Lewis county in eastern Kentucky (on the Ohio river). The plant would have six AP1000 reactors. They plan to start construction in 2028.
This means an NRC licensing period of ~2 years. Given that the AP1000 reactor design is certified, the required licensing will mainly be site evaluations.

Incredible news from @TheNuclearCo.
6.6 GW of big nukes. Outstanding.

This year, I interviewed @TheNuclearCo's founder, @JonathanWebbKY, about TNC's vision: nuclearbarbarians.com/p/the-…
On a personal note, this announcement made me brim with brotherly pride. @energybants, TNC's Chief of Staff, is a dear friend. Watching him realize a dream he's had for the decade I've known him fills me with hope and admiration.

The only way we’ve built nuclear at scale & affordably is by building the same reactor again and again. But we’ve forgotten how to do that.
Glad to see TNC renewing that playbook. Ambitious to build 6 AP1000s, but if they can apply lessons from Vogtle 3➡️4, this would be huge.
