I STAYED 3 MONTHS INSIDE THE RAINFOREST OF MAMFE. WHAT I SAW MADE ME RESIGN.
In 2012, I worked as a Project Evaluation Officer with a Geospatial Technology Group in Mamfe.
My job was simple: Trek kilometers every single day inside the rainforest, identifying and marking different tree species that were ready for exploitation. I was there to MONITOR and EVALUATE if companies were truly implementing SUSTAINABLE forest exploitation.
For 3 months, the forest was my office. No network. No good road. Just us, the GPS, and giant trees that have lived for 300 years.
But what I saw broke me.
What was written on paper as "sustainable exploitation" was MASS DESTRUCTION on the ground.
There was NO selective cutting.
They cut everything. Young trees, old trees, protected species. They left deep wounds in the forest and no tree to replace what they took. Bulldozers pulled down everything in their way.
I realized we were not exploiting the forest, we were killing it. We were erasing the future of our children for quick timber money.
A forest that took 500 years to grow can be destroyed in 5 days if we don't practice selective cutting.
What is selective cutting?
It means you only harvest mature trees, you leave the young ones to grow, you protect rare species, and you allow the forest to regenerate. You take one, you plant two.
But what I saw was: Take everything and leave nothing.
That is why I resigned. My conscience could not take it. I could not be part of a report that says "sustainable" when my eyes saw destruction.
12 years later, the effects are visible. Climate change, unpredictable rainfall, rivers drying up.
If we must exploit, let us exploit with sense.
Our forest is not our inheritance from our parents, it is a loan from our children.
Have you ever been to our rainforests in Amazon,Congo Basin,Indonesia,Malaysia etc? What did you see?

A carnivorous bat with a 1-meter wingspan and the name Vampyrum spectrum might make some people break into a cold sweat.
Fear not, as the huge species—known as the spectral bat—is a “false vampire” bat that keeps to itself in remote tropical forests. Individuals are also family-oriented and cuddly, according to a study published last year.

The UN "pre-COP" climate gathering has begun in the Fijian city of Nadi, where Pacific leaders are seeking to draw the world's attention to life on the frontline of climate change.
The South Pacific is among the most vulnerable regions in the world to global warming, from rising sea levels endangering homes to increasing temperatures causing coral bleaching.
This week's talks in Nadi and on the atoll nation of Tuvalu are a precursor to the larger UN-sponsored global climate summit COP31, which will be held next month in Turkey.
Pacific leaders are pushing for the world to stick to a target of limiting global warming to 1.5C, improve access to climate finance and give more attention to the impact on oceans.
"Our prime minister will carry three clear messages to the leaders this week: keep 1.5 degrees within reach, make finance reach the communities that need it and give the ocean its rightful place in the climate regime," Fiji's Climate Minister Lynda Tabuya told the opening ceremony.
Sea levels are rising at a record pace, driven by warming oceans and glacier melt, according to a UN report.
Up to 1.2 billion people could be displaced by 2050, with Pacific Island countries experiencing sea level rise at twice the global average, the report released in August said.

14 years without losing a rhino to poaching is a remarkable achievement. 14 years of hard-won conservation gains that will not be undone by the loss of a mother and her calf. Help us support the people behind those gains. Help us Protect the Strongholds.

All sorts of iconic and economically important species rely on Pacific sardines, which are now overfished.
But before they have a chance to recover, the Trump administration wants to increase fishing pressure again and remove sardine protections.
