Registering for #Botany2023 reminded me I have a Twitter! This week in Plant Systematics at @IowaStateU, our students learned about the Rosids…can you guess our two key outs in the bottom right image down to species? (Note: the one on the right is NOT a Rosid) – at Ames, IA

In addition to the sand prairie, this 228-acre property contains sedge meadows, woody thickets, and a fen, making it relatively diverse for its size. It’s even home to a species of adder’s tongue fern (Ophioglossium), a Botrychium sp., and other rare species. 2/3 – at Iowa, USA

This will be the first comprehensive floristic survey of this site in about a decade, and will help determine whether state management techniques are working effectively! 🌾🌼🐝 Some pictures here courtesy of @ElMcMurchie, who’s also part of this project. 3/3
Perks of studying crabgrass (Digitaria) include being able to make collections from the comfort of your backyard! Despite there only being 2 spp. in Iowa, this genus is pretty diverse, with over 220 spp. occurring worldwide. Most of the others occur in the tropics & subtropics. – at Ames, IA

Started field work this week for my investigation of glyphosate resistance in Phragmites australis. Lab work begins in the fall. Until then, tick nests and poison ivy are just part of the game.

Hey @indfnsofplnts, do you have any episodes about bamboos? I’m not aware of any easy way to search for podcast episodes in Spotify.

How many times a day do you ponder the idea of quitting school and going to live in the middle of nowhere and raise animals, make bread and be completely off grid? Or is that just a me thing. @AcademicChatter #phdchat #AcademicChatter #gradschool
