Today would have been my big brother Luke’s 44th birthday. Sadly he passed away last Tuesday from cancer. He was a loving father and husband, successful academic and my best friend and I’ll miss him terribly.
I have spent a lot of the past few days trying to make sense of this. But sometimes things don’t make sense and all we can do is sit with our grief and hold the people we love close. The best advice I received from someone during my brothers illness was never leave anything unsaid. Tell the people what they mean to you.

Clare lives in a south London apartment with a mortgage which she’ll be paying off for decades.
It’s small, but she’s decorated it to her taste. She couldn’t afford the full second bedroom but there’s just enough room for a single bed when mum comes to stay.
It’s not Clare’s fault that London’s supply of new homes is at a post-war low pushing the price of flats like hers to the point it may exceed £1.5 million.
As she gets up at dawn, Clare looks out the window at the social housing estate next door. Her taxes pay for many of its tenants to live in Zone 1. It’s quiet now but when she comes home in the dark, the smell of cannabis catches in her throat.
She sees many of them have cars she can’t afford herself. Clare would like to live further away, but she needs to get to work for 7.30 am, and the state-run railway is unreliable. She feels unsafe travelling and walking home at night.
It’s been another busy week at work, so she hasn’t seen the detail, but friends have messaged her about whopping rises in her council tax next year. She dreads to think.
Clare thinks it’s a ‘f***ing joke’ that Andy Burnham wants to slap a mansion tax on top of everything else she pays. She doesn’t live in a mansion - just a tiny flat.
Clare is right.

About 14 years ago I lived in Kentish Town, I was even briefly the secretary of the Labour branch before going back to Yorkshire. I’ve been proud to spend a few sessions in H&StP talking to voters about what a wonderful voice for the area @Sagal_AW will be in Parliament.

Paul Nowak is of course replacing Frances O’Grady who herself replaced Unison’s Dave Prentice. To leave out the context of unions being a traditional part of the board since 1942 suggests either the Sun’s political editor is seeking to mislead or doesn’t understand the role.

Paul Nowak is replacing Frances O’Grady, his predecessor at the TUC, who was appointed a Bank of England director in 2019 under a Tory government.
She in turn replaced Unison chief Dave Prentis, also appointed under a Tory govt. He replaced Brendan Barber (TUC), who replaced Bill Morris (TGWU), who replaced Gavin Laird (appointed under Thatcher) etc etc. This is not new!

Today Parliament is debating the assisted dying bill. I will be voting against. I have struggled with this more than any other vote since becoming an MP.
But the bill in its current form does not do enough to protect vulnerable constituents from coercion and those with disabilities. And gaps in social and palliative care mean that those on low incomes will not have a choice between a comfortable death and an early one.
Without fixing palliative care there is no choice. And with a bill that has auto commencement there is no discretion for the health secretary to ensure the state of palliative care is adequate before it comes in.
