Standardized tests, doubted and maligned, were the hero of the NHJ story. They tried to send a warning, but were ignored.

A hallmark of capable government is its ability to mobilize resources beyond the public sector in pursuit of public goals. Public-private collaboration isn't the opposite of state capacity. Done well, it's one expression of it.

Core US cities like Dallas can't compete with their suburbs on the suburbs' definition of success. It's too easy to work from home now.
These cities need to double down on density and walkability, to provide a real alternative to what the suburbs offer. Give people choices!

Embarassing thing to tweet. Here's a non-exhaustive list of state-led initiatives that made life better for the weak + poor:
- Deposit insurance
- Clean Air Act
- Ending leaded gasoline
- Child labor laws
- Child vaccination programs
- OSHA
- Rural electrification
- GI Bill

One of the more promising trends in philanthropy is the emergence of 8 and 9 figure donations to low-resourced, higher-ed institutions where most of America's youth are educated. This is the largest gift ever to a community college system. Kudos @StevenACohen2.

It’s about time we begin to recognize institutions based off of the economic mobility they provide, rather than the students they exclude. 👏

The most robust intervention across so many fields is 1-to-1 coaching. It's effective for mentors, tutors, sports, mental health, relationships, management, fitness, diet etc, but high expense limits access to the wealthy. Until tech can more closely mimic the effects, access to personalized coaching is a large and growing gap in equality of opportunity. The combo of AI+VR offer promise, but have, thus far, largely failed to replicate the active ingredient of human interaction.
