It's so funny to me that this is the big critical gotcha against John Oliver being passed around, because they're just... describing talkshow comedy. These people think they're being hypnotized because talkshow comedy follows an effective and predictable cadence.
ALT A far too long 4chan post basically saying John Oliver's show hypnotizes people into being libs by presenting information, making a joke about it, and then pausing if the audience laughs at the joke.
