Pope Leo XIV has expressed his profound sorrow following a train collision in Urda in central Spain, which claimed 68 lives and left many others injured. The Pope sent his "heartfelt condolences to the families of those who have died, as well as words of comfort, deep concern, and wishes for a speedy recovery for the injured." In his telegram of condolences sent Thursday to Archbishop Francisco Cerro Chaves of Toledo, Pope Leo encouraged rescue teams to persevere in their efforts to bring relief and assistance to those affected. The Holy Father entrusted all those suffering in the aftermath of this tragedy to God’s comfort and mercy, and imparted his Apostolic Blessing.

What fascinates me most about ancient Roman engineering is how something built centuries ago can still leave us amazed today. Looking at this underground water channel, I can’t help wondering about the people who designed and constructed it without modern machinery, computers, or advanced surveying tools. The Romans understood something fundamental about engineering: water could be moved efficiently by using gravity, carefully planned gradients, and durable construction. Their aqueduct systems supplied cities, baths, fountains, and households, becoming an essential part of urban life. What I find most impressive is the practical thinking behind such structures. This wasn’t architecture created merely to impress the eye; it served a real purpose and reflected a deep understanding of materials and water management. Ancient engineering reminds us that progress isn’t always about having the newest technology. Sometimes, it’s about understanding the basics so well that your work continues to inspire people nearly two millennia later.

Today, October 29, is the feast day of Saint Narcissus of Jerusalem, the 30th Bishop of Jerusalem. He is of Greek origin, he became bishop around 180 AD while already advanced in age (about 80). He was known for his holiness, discipline, and miracles. The most famous, recorded by the historian Eusebius, occurred on Holy Saturday/Easter Vigil when the church lamps ran out of oil: Narcissus prayed over water, which was poured into the lamps and miraculously turned into oil. He faced false accusations of a serious crime. Rather than fight them, he withdrew into solitude (leading many to think he had died). When his accusers suffered the punishments they had invoked on themselves if they lied, he was vindicated, returned, and resumed his duties. In extreme old age he appointed St. Alexander as coadjutor and continued serving until his peaceful death at over 100 (sources say around 116–117). St. Narcissus, pray for us 🌹

Saint Narcissus of Jerusalem was an early bishop of Jerusalem, traditionally numbered the thirtieth in succession from the apostles, and is venerated as a confessor. He was born about the year 99, of Greek origin, and became bishop of Jerusalem, then called Aelia Capitolina, when he was already about eighty years old, around 180 or 185. Eusebius of Caesarea records that he was known for his holiness, austerity, and zeal for discipline. In 195 he and Theophilus, bishop of Caesarea, presided over a council of Palestinian bishops held at Caesarea that decreed Easter should always be celebrated on a Sunday rather than on the date of the Jewish Passover. Eusebius also preserves the memory of a miracle attributed to him: on the eve of Easter the oil for the church lamps ran out; Narcissus ordered water to be brought, prayed over it, and directed that it be poured into the lamps, whereupon it was found to have been changed into oil. Some members of the community later brought serious false accusations against him. Rather than defend himself, Narcissus withdrew into solitude in the desert and lived for several years as an ascetic. During his absence the see was occupied successively by Dius, Germanion, and Gordius. According to the tradition recorded by Eusebius, the three principal accusers suffered the very punishments they had invoked in their oaths: one perished by fire, the second was stricken with leprosy, and the third, repenting, publicly confessed the calumny and later lost his sight through continual weeping. Narcissus then returned, was vindicated, and was urged by the faithful to resume the episcopate. In extreme old age he appointed Saint Alexander of Cappadocia as his coadjutor. Alexander, in a letter, refers to Narcissus as still living at about one hundred and sixteen years of age and exhorting the faithful to unity. Narcissus is said to have died peacefully about 212 or 216, traditionally while at prayer, at the age of approximately one hundred and seventeen. Some Eastern sources speak of him as a hieromartyr, but the Western tradition remembers him principally as a confessor and miracle-worker. His feast is kept on 29 October in the Roman calendar and on 7 August in the Eastern Orthodox calendar. (He is not to be confused with Narcissus of the Seventy, bishop of Athens).

🔸 October 29 - Saint Anastasia the Roman 🔸 Today, we commemorate the Holy Martyr Saint Anastasia the Roman who suffered for Christ during the reign of the emperor Decius (249-251). St Anastasia was born in Rome, and lost her parents at the age of 3. As an orphan, she was taken to a women’s monastery where she was brought up by the Abbess Sophia who had attained great spiritual wisdom and holiness. Sophia raised Anastasia in fervent faith, the fear of God, and humble obedience. After 17 years, Anastasia was known in the whole neighbourhood, to the Christians as a great ascetic and to the pagans as a rare beauty. The pagan administrator of the city, Probus, heard of Anastasia and sent soldiers to bring her to him. Before her arrest, Anastasia told her Abbess, “My heart is ready to suffer for Christ; my soul is ready to die for my beloved Jesus.” Probus tried first to flatter Anastasia saying, “Why waste your youth, deprived of pleasure? What is there to gain by enduring tortures and death for the Crucified One? Worship our gods, marry a handsome husband, and live in glory and honor.” Anastasia replied, “My spouse, my riches, my life and my happiness are my Lord Jesus Christ, and you cannot turn me away from Him by your deceit!” When Probus had Anastasia stripped of her clothes, she told him, “You can have me whipped, beaten, and cut to pieces, and then my nakedness will be hidden by my wounds, and my blood will cover my shame.” The martyr was beaten and burned over a fire, but through her prayers, she was able to moderate the agony of the pain. When she scorned the pagan gods as demonic, the tyrants cut out her tongue. They also cut off her breasts and pulled out her fingernails and teeth. Anastasia fainted from the pain, and a Christian named Cyril gave her water for which he was beheaded. The people, seeing the inhuman treatment of the saint, became indignant, and the ruler was compelled to end the tortures. And thus, St Anastasia was finally beheaded with the sword. Her body was thrown outside the city to be eaten by wild animals, but the Lord preserved her. An Angel guided the Abbess Sophia to her mutilated body so she could be buried.

When this 17-year-old girl found out she was dying, she spent 25 minutes alone in her room. And what happened next would leave even her doctors speechless... ⤵️ 📅 October 29: Feast day of Blessed Chiara Luce Badano Her name was Chiara Badano. And in 1988, what started as a simple pain in her shoulder turned into a nightmare no teenager should ever have to face. At first, doctors believed it was just a muscle injury. But the pain kept getting worse. And when they finally discovered the truth, it was devastating. Chiara had bone cancer. And it had already spread throughout her body. She was just 17 years old. When she returned home, she went straight to her bedroom, collapsed onto her bed, and didn't say a single word. For 25 minutes, she lay there in silence. Her mother knew her daughter was facing something unimaginable. Chiara had her entire future ahead of her. Dreams of growing older, falling in love, getting married, and raising a family. And suddenly, all of it was slipping away. But what happened after those 25 minutes would become the defining moment of her life. Chiara made a choice. She wasn't going to let her suffering separate her from Jesus. Instead, she decided to offer every moment of her pain to Him. And from that day forward, she held onto one simple prayer. "For you, Jesus, if you want it, I want it too." But her suffering was only beginning. Over the next two years, the cancer continued spreading. The treatments were brutal. Chemotherapy weakened her body, she eventually lost the ability to walk, and the pain became almost impossible to endure. Yet something happened that nobody expected. While her body was growing weaker, her faith seemed to be growing stronger. Instead of becoming bitter, Chiara continued smiling. Instead of questioning whether God loved her, she kept offering Him her suffering. Her family would sometimes hear her singing when she thought she was alone. And when doctors offered her morphine to ease the pain, she chose to remain conscious, believing she could unite her suffering with Jesus on the cross. But here's what made her story even more extraordinary. Friends would come to visit Chiara because they felt sorry for her. They wanted to comfort her, encourage her, and somehow make her remaining days a little easier. But something completely unexpected kept happening. They would leave feeling like Chiara had been the one comforting them. A teenage girl who was dying was somehow giving hope to people who were perfectly healthy. Her joy was so remarkable that people began calling her "Luce." It means "light." And that's exactly what she had become to everyone around her. Even one of her doctors was deeply moved by her smile and the peace she carried while facing death. But as her final days approached, Chiara made one request that her mother would never forget. She wanted to be buried wearing a wedding dress. And the reason was heartbreaking. Chiara knew she would never experience the wedding she might once have dreamed of. But she believed death wasn't the end of her story. She believed she was finally going to meet Jesus face-to-face. And she wanted to be dressed like a bride for that moment. She even asked her mother to make her funeral a celebration, with singing instead of mourning. Then, on October 7, 1990, just weeks before her 19th birthday, Chiara took her final breath. But before she died, she left her mother with one last message. "Goodbye. Be happy because I'm happy." Twenty years later, in 2010, the Catholic Church officially declared her Blessed Chiara Luce Badano. A young girl who never became famous for wealth, beauty, or accomplishments. But for something far more extraordinary. Her unshakable love for Jesus, even when following Him meant carrying a cross she never asked for. Chiara couldn't stop the cancer. She couldn't change her diagnosis. And she couldn't choose how many years she would live. But she could choose what she would do with the time she had left. And she chose Jesus. Not just when life was beautiful. But when life was unbearably painful. And maybe that's what makes her story so powerful. Because it's easy to say we trust God when everything is going our way. But Chiara showed what faith looks like when everything is falling apart. 💬 If God never explained why He allowed your greatest suffering, would you still be able to trust Him?

¡Viva Cristo Rey!
