Had a wonderful weekend talking about my book ‘Hard Truth’ at lit festivals… first Henley, then the Isle of Wight. There’s a huge appetite for discussion about the vital role played by courageous independent journalism as a defence against tyranny. Join me on tour if you can!
Fix the governance deficits and restore investors' confidence and watch things fall in place. Our Human rights record is terrible. Our civic space is shutting down. Bad politics has consequences.
Let's save some money. The economy is bad enough as it is.
This year’s Independence Day Celebrations are to be held virtually at State House with only 30 people expected to attend physically.

My brilliant colleague @BBCSteveR has been remembering Ana Politkovskaya today. She was the most courageous of journalists. I write about her at length in my new book #HardTruth out tomorrow. Independent journalism remains a vital defence against tyranny…
20 years ago today Anna Politkovskaya, one of Russia’s most prominent investigative journalists, was murdered. I found no mention of the anniversary in today's Russian newspapers. #ReadingRussia
Classic example of emotion-based policy making instead evidence-based policy making.
The @BOU_Official Governor warned the @NRMOnline @GovUganda about the Protection of Sovereignty Law. @Parliament_Ug went ahead and passed it with impunity! Now the shilling is nosediving with the USD at over 4,000 and GBP at over 5,000. Meanwhile fuel prices are fast rising to over 7,000. Several donors have made a decision that their money will not come to Uganda anymore. Our domestic debt is far higher than the foreign debt. The regime thought it was punishing NGOs and the opposition. In the end, Ugandans are paying the price for a high regime appetite to become an autocracy. @SarahBireete @KakwenzaRukira @kiizaeron @Winnie_Byanyima @cobbo3 @FGoloobaMutebi @Thomas_Tayebwa @KajwengyeW @MzeeKayiira @ObothOboth @FoxOdoi @KiryowaKk @karamagi_andrew @PhillipKarugaba @pmagelah @KagutaMuseveni

Today — on the eighth centenary of his death — I wish to recall a laborer who worked with great fruitfulness in the Lord’s vineyard: Saint Francis of Assisi, whom Jesus Himself asked to repair His Church.

One thing she has in spades over her tormentors is time. @AloikinOpoloje will be here long after they are gone. She will have the last smile, of that I am sure.

EFFICIENT MAYBE NOT EFFECTIVE!
The Uganda driving license system outfit at the Railway Station is super efficient. From check in to check out, it took me less than 45 minutes to get my driving license renewed for another 5 years.
It all started one month ago with a text message alerting me of the pending expiry of my license in a month’s time. That too was impressive.
But as I waltzed through the clockwork of @UDLSOfficial system, I kept wondering….how can this super efficient system be improved to ensure only technically, physically and mentally sound people are licensed to be on the road?
Hear me out. In 2003, when I got my license, I had no physical restrictions. At the moment , with our poor lighting on the roads, I need spectacles to boost my night vision. It’s more than a decade since I was last required to have any medical examinations before my license is renewed. My license bears no restrictions.
This begs the question; how many “blind” and mentally challenged drivers are smoothly sailing through this efficient system and are now moving disasters on the road?
For a country battling a pandemic of road crashes, blindly renewing drivers’ licenses in minutes without any tests, borders on setting up another smooth revenue machinery but a reckless gatekeeper at the crucial gate releasing the men and women behind the wheel.
Simple adjustments to ensure crucial tests are part of the driving license renewal cycle can make the efficient system at UDLS an effective tool in ensuring only safety-compliant drivers are licensed to get on the road.
It’s people who move vehicles, let’s make the movements safe.

Our Lady of Lourdes, the Immaculate Conception, Mother full of love, we entrust to you our most urgent personal intentions, especially those of the sick and suffering. We entrust to you our living and deceased loved ones. We pray that you will remove all the obstacles that still separate us from your beloved Son. May He may reign in all hearts. “To invoke God’s name in order to justify violence or oppression is to profane His name,” he said. “Nothing that disfigures human dignity can claim to be inspired by God.”
He who has ears must hear this and take it to heart. You can't claim to love Jesus/God one minute and the next you are doing the ungodly.
Invoking the name of God to legitimize violence or oppression constitutes a profanation of His name. Nothing that violates human dignity can claim authentic divine inspiration. Religious discourse must constantly call for hearts and words to be disarmed. #ApostolicJourney #France vatican.va/content/leo-xiv/e…
