US teachers on average spend 28 hours of their work week in face-to-face instruction. Finland? 21 hours. Japan? 18 hours. Who could have guessed that giving teachers more time time to plan, assess, give feedback, engage in professional learning, etc. would improve outcomes?

ChatGPT is everywhere and everyone is using it. But most academics don't know how to use it *smartly.* Here's how to use ChatGPT intelligently (and ethically) for academic purposes:

To my exhausted teacher friends with a pile of papers, do the following. 1) Find an exemplar to analyze with students. 2) Develop a method to support student reflection (rubric, checklist, rubric template, etc.) 3) Plan a guided reflection activity (peer or self). Go rest.

🧵Feedback was something that felt like a waste of time for me for a long time with my students. It seemed like I would spend hours providing it only to have it be ignored. I blamed the kids, when I should have been looking at my practice. Here's what I've changed... 1/

Small question at the bottom of any activity that can have a big impact: "What previous feedback was most helpful to you in making sure you grew on this attempt?" Alternately, at the top: "What previous feedback will be most helpful to you on this assignment?"

How can we help students see that their next success isn't far off? To me, this is one of the most important questions we can ask regarding assessment in our classrooms.

One of my most used questions now when having a discussion about a topic I disagree on with someone else is, “What evidence would change your mind?” If they can’t or won’t name anything, that conversation’s not worth having. They’ve identified that they aren’t open to change.

Every single school should be working to figure out how to double plan time for teachers. The US requires more instructional minutes from teachers than almost any other country in the world (Argentina and Chile are the only two higher than us). A thread... 1/
