We precipitated the nightmare scenario in the Persian Gulf, and the economic sky didn’t fall. Another piece of evidence the United States would do well to simply leave the region.
Taking a step back from the ups-and-downs of the oil market, one remarkable feat: global economic growth remains largely unchanged since the spring. @KGeorgieva: "Steady global growth has continued" The IMF/WB annual gathering is next week: imf.org/en/news/articles/202…

Merz musing about eliminating the secret ballot. Normal "democracy" moment in Europe nitter.cf/clashreport/status/210…
Germany’s Chancellor Merz: In the state election in Saxony-Anhalt, voters gave the AfD and the BSW, two authoritarian and extremist parties, a combined absolute majority for the first time. It was a secret ballot. We do not know who exactly gave their votes to the AfD candidate. How and whether this secret ballot can ever be clarified remains to be seen. But for me, one thing is clear: Anyone who votes for a member of a far-right extremist party to become president of the state parliament must reconcile that with their conscience.

Relatable, tbh.
SCOOP: Ken Paxton, asked about the biggest drag on his campaign, said, "It's the war, it's gas prices," per audio obtained by @axios He agreed he can't stop the Iran War and said: "I don't ... know what's behind some of the decisions." w/ @StefWKight axios.com/2026/10/07/ken-pax…

POTUS shouldn't suggest the choice was between this war or Iran nuking LA or SD because it wasn't. But the idea that he was *calling on Iran to nuke LA or SD* is so dumb that I would prefer not to entertain the idea that's what anyone thought he said.

some people think the president shouldn't say things like that I guess. dunno why that seems to upset you so much.

The former US Ambassador to Russia, who bragged to Glenn Greenwald that he makes a million dollars a year at Stanford, cannot listen or think, apparently. I oppose this war as much as anybody. But there's no reason to saw off your prefrontal cortex.

Put Gavin Newsom in this category. Is he this bad at politics? Did somebody tell him there's upside here?

Oil is flowing through Hormuz, and prices are $100/barrel. That’s not a contradiction. Oil is moving *because* prices are $100/barrel. That’s the risk premium necessary for crews to risk their lives and insurers to underwrite it. $100/barrel also makes land routes through Syria economical. Without US naval assistance, the market clearing prices for oil would be even higher. But is it really a US victory for prewar oil flows to resume at $100/barrel instead of the $60-70/barrel we had before the Iran War? Especially when we have to devote 30% of deployed USN vessels to achieve $100/barrel oil?

How insulting to your own country.

NOT ALL DC THINK-TANK HACKS
Love this argument from attorneys for Max Boot's wife, who argue that she shouldn't be prosecuted for taking undisclosed luxury gifts from SKorean intelligence while publishing editorials on US-Korea policy because every other DC think-tank hack does it. (from Jack Poulson)

Emmanuel Macron says American free speech is "the opposite of free speech." In his view, freedom only exists inside a "common framework" set by the state. He compared posting an insult online to hitting someone in the street. Those are different things, because one is speech and the other is violence. He wants people punished for posting "nonsense," with state-backed fact-checkers deciding what qualifies. He wants a verified identity behind every social media account. He has written to Ursula von der Leyen demanding the DSA be enforced "much faster, much more forcefully." reclaimthenet.org/macron-urg…
