At just 25 years old, Cassie Bertwell was diagnosed with renal failure caused by systemic lupus while pregnant, undergoing chemotherapy, and facing the possibility of losing the private health insurance her family relied on. After 14 months on dialysis, Cassie received a kidney transplant from her brother. Today, she is nine years post-transplant and the proud mom of a healthy 6-year-old daughter. Now, Cassie is using her story to advocate for others living with kidney disease. She is urging Congress to support the Restore Protections for Dialysis Patients Act and help ensure patients can focus on their health and treatment, not the threat of financial crisis. Dialysis patients need Congress to act on lifesaving innovation. After more than 3 decades on dialysis, DPC Board Member Alethea Walls knows firsthand what expanded treatment options could mean for patients. Join KCP member Dialysis Patient Citizens in urging Congress to pass the Kidney Care Access Protection Act (S. 2730 / H.R. 6214) and help drive meaningful progress in kidney care.
DPC Board Member Alethea Walls shares how important access to private insurance coverage is to patients who are trying to get a transplant.  As a resident of Michigan under the age of 65, she does not have access to Medigap coverage to pay for the 20% coinsurance that Medicare does not cover. Since Alethea worked for so many years and continues to look for additional employment opportunities, she is not eligible for Medicaid.  Unfortunately, individuals like Alethea are often forced to choose between employment and access to essential health care. Dialysis patients didn’t choose their disease, but they should be allowed to choose the health insurance coverage that works best for them.  As a result, we need Congress to act now and pass The Restore Protections for Dialysis Patients Act (S.1173 / H.R.2199).  This bipartisan bill seeks to ensure that dialysis patients can keep their private insurance coverage as they transition onto dialysis and look to secure a potential kidney transplant.

KCP released a statement in response to HHS’s 2026 Kidney Care National Plan today. KCP noted that regulatory and reimbursement barriers continue to slow progress in kidney care and stands ready to partner with the Administration to transform the nation’s kidney care delivery system. For people living with kidney disease, stable, affordable insurance coverage can be a matter of life or death. 🎥 Hear from DPC Patient Ambassador Cassie Bertwell as she urges Congress to protect access to lifesaving care, allowing patients to focus on their health instead of medical bills. Cassie's story is featured in a video series from Dialysis Patient Citizens, a KCP member, supporting the Restore Protections for Dialysis Patients Act (S. 1173 / H.R. 2199).
DPC Patient Ambassador Cassie Bertwell is speaking out for dialysis patients. 💙 Cassie is urging Congress to support the Restore Protections for Dialysis Patients Act (S. 1173 / H.R. 2199) and protect access to stable, affordable private insurance coverage for people living with kidney failure. When coverage becomes unstable, dialysis patients can face gaps in care, financial hardship, and disruptions to lifesaving treatment. Restoring these long-standing protections would help patients maintain private insurance during the critical transition period before Medicare becomes their primary coverage. Thousands of dialysis patients didn’t choose their disease—but they should be able to choose the coverage that works best for them. Join Cassie and DPC in urging Congress to pass the Restore Protections for Dialysis Patients Act and help protect coverage and access to care for dialysis patients working toward a transplant. youtube.com/watch?v=QZFcOai3… #KidneyAdvocacy #AdvocacyInAction #PatientAdvocacy #PassTheFixin26 #PassRESTOREAct #CareWithoutBarriers

Every dialysis patient has a story. 🎥 Hear from DPC Board President Quiana Bishop as she shares her kidney care journey. Her video is part of a testimonial series from @PatientCitizen, a KCP member, highlighting why the Kidney Care Access Protection Act (S. 2730 / H.R. 6214) is important to sustaining dialysis clinics, supporting the kidney care workforce, and protecting patient access to innovative treatments.
For more than 10 years, DPC Board President Quiana Bishop has relied on dialysis to stay alive. Over that decade, she’s worked with countless healthcare professionals who play a critical role in helping her receive safe, quality care and stay healthy. But across many communities—especially rural communities—rising costs, workforce shortages, and inadequate reimbursement are putting increasing pressure on dialysis clinics. When staffing levels decline, patients feel the impact directly, especially those who depend on skilled healthcare professionals and the resources they need to provide safe, effective care. Investing in innovation doesn’t just benefit patients; it also supports the professionals who give their all to caring for the kidney community. That’s why DPC is calling on Congress to pass the bipartisan Kidney Care Access Protection Act (KCAPA) — S. 2730 / H.R. 6214. This legislation would help improve care for dialysis patients, expand access to new and innovative therapies, address ongoing workforce challenges, and help ensure patients continue to receive the care they depend on. Strengthening kidney care isn’t optional; it’s lifesaving. 🎥 Watch Quiana’s story and learn more about why KCAPA matters. youtu.be/f3jPXny-bbY?si=8bF4…
