Do you remember, long ago in the plague time, when we made face masks? I had some cut out and the other day repurposed the fabric into bunting. The only thing is, though, that it’s all William Morris and Indonesian batik. I have made the most middle class bunting ever.

It is of course #notallmen who rape and kill women. But it’s enough of them to justify single sex female spaces and the exclusion of ALL men, even the nice ones. Decent men understand this and stay out. The ones keen to come in - listen when they tell you who and what they are.

Sooty sneaked on board Tank Landing Craft Five and befriended the crew just prior to the raid on Dieppe in 1942. When the crew was forced to abandon ship after TLC-5 was hit by enemy fire, Sooty survived by clinging to the helmet of one of the men. The crew made her a medal for bravery and then applied for an official award. The request was denied because Sooty had been a stowaway rather than a recognized member of the ship's crew. In 1993, a former crewman donated his own medal to a museum in honor of Sooty. #cat #cats #caturday #catlore

Maybe the fact that my first instinct on seeing a TV listing of a programme with ‘dating’ in the title was that it must be about archaeology says more about me than about TV listings…

I am so infuriated that the BBC chooses to make economies by cutting any Radio 4 programme which involves intelligent conversation. Why not ditch Chris Mason, Laura Kuenssberg or Women’s’ Hour (which seems to have forgotten what a woman is)?

I’m sixty five. As a boy I knew some extremely old people who occasionally reminisced about old people they had known when they were themselves young. It’s surprising how far back one can go with eyewitness testimony on that basis. For example my grandmother (b 1883) saw the Diamond Jubilee procession of 1897 and told me about it often enough for it still to seem like a recent event to me now. More curious, Lawrie Tanner (b. 1890) lived in Westminster School where his father was a housemaster. As a boy he knew an old man who remembered shooting snipe on what is now Vincent Square. That takes one back to about 1840, say 185 years. Now there’s a point to this and it concerns the memory of the early Church. Irenaeus, writing in about the year 180, wrote that as a boy he had known Polycarp, who knew the Apostle John personally.

I see that Jeffrey Archer has died and I am reminded of my only encounter with him. I was 15 and had cycled in to Louth cattle market (he was MP for Louth at the time). I was leaning on a sheep pen, trying to blend in, when JA greeted me. 1/n

You need to marry a rich farmer. I shall find you one.” And that might have been it, except that a couple of weeks later I was walking along Mercer Row with friends at lunchtime and JA walked past on the other side of the road. 3/n

“Ah, Kate! I haven’t found you a husband yet, I’m afraid!” he yelled. “Who on Earth is that?” asked a friend. “No idea,” I said. “Just some nut case…” [end]
