How does the retina distinguish an object moving through the world from the world moving around us? In work led by Pratyush Ramakrishna (w. Josh Morgan), we discover motion-coherence selectivity—and show how single-cell and population geometry create it. science.org/doi/10.1126/scia…
To bridge the gap to translation, we developed an RP model in adult human retinal explants and show that both gene therapies protect photoreceptors, highlighting their therapeutic promise as mutation-agnostic strategies against proteotoxicity. authors.elsevier.com/a/1mvXe…
New study led by @NingShenStella w/ @phruzycki: a genome-wide in vivo CRISPR screen in a retinitis pigmentosa mouse model identifies genes whose loss accelerates photoreceptor death. Overexpressing two, UFD1 and UXT, preserves photoreceptors, retinal function, and vision. 🧵
The ON/OFF dichotomy is fundamental to visual processing. In a new study led by Flori Soto, we identify a conserved molecular mechanism establishing the OFF pathway. rdcu.be/eikoa
In a new study led by @jmkrizan, we explore the origins of direction selectivity in superior colliculus and its contributions to predation, identifying behavioral multiplexing of complex feature preferences. bit.ly/49YwYZl
In a new study led by Emily Hsiang and @NingShenStella , we uncover parallel pathways for spatial and temporal information of naturalistic stimuli, respectively, in the early visual system. rdcu.be/dz5g7
@Marlafeller@mstdn.science and I wrote a review on the organization of retinal projections to the brain and their development. Hopefully, it is useful to some. bit.ly/3GxadP2
A review of neurodegeneration in the eye, its convergent pathogenesis, and innovative approaches to preserving and restoring vision. Hopefully, it is useful to some. bit.ly/3ZOHNZH
Preprint from a collaboration with the x-less Morgan lab (connectomics experts) combining two-photon calcium imaging and 3D electron microscopy in the same tissue to map the varied subcellular information paths through a retinal interneuron. bit.ly/43YF4xr
In collaboration with the twitterless Morgan lab (lead), we developed an approach to combine functional two-photon imaging with electron microscopy reconstructions to study dendritic processing in genetically identified neuron populations. bit.ly/3TwrrB7
