This makes me sick. Whenever people ask me why I left, I tell them it was the worst breakup because I love journalism, but the pay was shit and the industry’s instability made it untenable to stay. Thinking of my friends @EverettGuild ✊🏼 seattletimes.com/opinion/big…

Remembering the great Nina Simone who was born on this day in 1933. Known for creating urgent emotional intensity by singing songs of love, protest, and Black empowerment in a dramatic style, with a rough-edged voice, Simone’s bearing and stage presence earned her the title “the High Priestess of Soul”. Onstage, she incorporated monologs and dialogues with the audience into the program, and often used silence as a musical element. A friend of Langston Hughes, James Baldwin, Lorraine Hansberry, and neighbour of Malcom X, she became involved in the the civil rights movement. She was deeply immersed in movement politics, debates and organizing. Her song “Mississippi Goddamn,” written after the 1963 bombing of 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham Alabama, became an anthem of the civil rights movement. Simone and Lorraine Hansberry discussed “Marx, Lenin, and revolution” instead of fashion and men,” and through her music and her political activism, she committed herself to “fighting for a different kind of society,” one founded on equality. Here, she is performing “I Put a Spell On You” live in 1968.

Longtime Whidbey diver Jan Kocian has circled the island exploring the marine environment. “That diversity is gone,” he said. “It’s unfortunately in every location on the island. The diving is not even close to what it used to be.” whidbeynewstimes.com/life/wh…

Water bottle talk with the Herald staff.
People go bonkers over whatever water bottle is trending. TikToks and news stories showed people camped at Target stores on Jan. 3 for a shot at scoring a limited-edition glimmering pink Starbucks Stanley Quencher, @reporterbrown reports. heraldnet.com/news/water-cup…

Yesterday afternoon we learned that Black Press, the parent company of Sound Publishing and the Everett Herald, is for sale. Members of the Everett NewsGuild are closely watching to see what this may ultimately mean for our newspaper and its readers across Snohomish County.
