#Yemen: @volker_turk calls for immediate access for humanitarian relief to #Taiz to avert a human rights catastrophe following the encirclement of the city by de facto authorities.
Humanitarian aid must be immediately allowed to enter the city and its passage must be facilitated. Civilians wishing to leave must be allowed to do so freely and safely.

The plight of Taiz is alarming. The Houthis have cut off the key routes into the city, making it increasingly difficult to bring in water, fuel, food, and medicine. Stocks are dwindling and prices are rising, further deepening the suffering of civilians. crisisgroup.org/qna/middle-e…

The full article:
"America and its regional allies never shared a lofty agenda. There was no liberal-democratic project to bind them together, as in Europe after the second world war. Nor did America foster the sort of economic growth it pursued in Asia.
It wanted simply to keep the oil flowing, protect Israel and maintain its bases (later it would add smashing jihadists to the list). None of these goals required Arab states to be capable or prosperous; in fact, some were easier if they were not. That was fine for its allies, which cared mostly about the preservation of their regimes.
It achieved all of those—for a time. But today its bases have been battered, its oil tankers are under attack and its closest ally, Israel, has been at war for three years. Even if Mr Trump had not rashly broken it, what America built over the past 35 years was not durable at all: too many of the region’s states were weak, divided or failed ones." economist.com/middle-east-an…

Attention to Bab al-Mandab & the military escalation in #Yemen must not overshadow the arbitrary detention, ill-treatment, prosecution, and medical neglect of the UN and civil society workers, arbitrarily detained by #Houthis. Read @CIHRS statement: cihrs.org/yemen-prosecution-…
Defense Secretary Peter Hegseth’s reversal on decades of progress on civilian harm mitigation and response procedures has contributed to more civilian casualties, writes @mae_thomps, @K_Beckerle, and Luke Moffett. lawfaremedia.org/article/fro…
The Defense Department's rollback on civilian harm mitigation and response represents a dangerous retreat from the growing consensus that effective civilian harm response is integral to responsible and effective military operations, writes Mae Thompson, @K_Beckerle, and Luke Moffett.

The area that Israel is now occupying in Lebanon (behind the so called yellow line) represents almost 6% of Lebanon.
- To put it in American terms, this is bigger than California (not that far off the size of Texas).
- In French terms, it represents Normandie.

We wrote about how migrant workers are facing the heaviest toll as war comes to the Gulf countries, which have faced a daily barrage of Iranian missile and drone attacks.
At least 12 civilians have been killed. All but one of them were foreign nationals.

Less than a half-hour’s drive from the charm of central Damascus, the suburb of Darayya feels a world away.
It shows how much time and aid are needed if ruined areas are to become livable again: a lesson as obvious as it is ignored by those pushing returns to Syria. 🧵
