Why so many Ukrainians speak russian? Let me explain. But first, let me ask you a question: Why do Irish and Scotts speak English, Catalans and Basques speak Spanish, Bretons speak French, etc. You probably know the short answer. But let me put a longer one. Ukrainian language was banned by russia 134 times! Here are most notable events: 1720: A decree by Tsar Peter I banned the printing of books in Ukraine. 1753: A decree by Catherine II prohibited teaching in the Ukrainian language. 1768: A decree from the Synod of the russian Orthodox Church called for the confiscation of Ukrainian primers from the population. 1775: Closure of Ukrainian schools after russian troops destroyed the Zaporizhian Sich. 1830-1840s: russification of Ukraine intensified. Even the very name "Ukraine" was prohibited to be used. 1889: At an archaeological congress in Kyiv, it was permitted to read papers "in all languages except Ukrainian." 1895: A ban on Ukrainian children's literature. 1914: A ban on the Ukrainian press. 1938: Mandatory study of the russian language was introduced throughout Ukraine. At the same time, there was a mass closure of national schools, and the prestige of the Ukrainian language declined. 1926-1939: Physical deportations of Ukrainian activists accused of nationalism. Four family members on my mother’s side were deported. 1929: Newly printed dictionary of Ukrainian was prohibited. 1960s: Arrests and extermination of the young generation of Ukrainian intelligentsia. 130 years ago, Ukrainian-speaking area was not limited by Ukraine, but also some parts of russia and Belarus spoke it (see the red area, that's the result of russian Empire census in 1897, when people identified themselves by the language). So, when someone says that some region of Ukraine is “russian speaking”, read the above list again. It’s a miracle that Ukrainian language even survived, and many people sacrificed their lives for it.

Anyone thinking Ukraine should ‘concede terrirory for peace’ should look at what happens to Ukrainians in occupied territories One of the worst humanitarian crisis is unfolding in Oleshky today. Mass starvation and murder by drones. That’s what happens. @ZarinaZabrisky reports

The situation in Oleshky is critical. There is no food or water, and the vegetable season that allowed locals to survive the summer is coming to an end. New supplies and evacuations are both impossible due to a total blockade. "Starting in March—when actual famine hit the town—I don't know why, but the cats somehow vanished. They were probably torn apart by the packs of dogs still roaming the streets. I have photos where dogs are simply eating the body of a deceased person. I realize this might be too graphic to cover, but I want you to understand what is happening in the town: there is simply no one to help bury a body. If it's not an occupier's body, the attitude is 'let it just rot and disappear there.' At best, someone might drag it behind a fence," says Tetyana Hasanenko. (Excerpt translated from a radio svoboda report: radiosvoboda.org/a/golod-v-o…) Oleshky desperately needs public awareness and aid! People there will not survive this winter, the town lacks not only food, but also gas and electricity.
🧵URGENT. HUMANITARIAN CRISIS IN OLESHKY/THE OCCUPIED TERRITORIES OF THE KHERSON REGION. I am writing to urgently draw global attention to a severe humanitarian crisis on the Russian-occupied left bank of the Dnipro River in the Kherson region of Ukraine, to seek immediate action

Four years ago today, Ukraine liberated Izium. What was uncovered shocked the world: 447 graves, including 414 civilians and 5 children. Most died violently. This is what russian occupation leaves behind. Mass graves. Never forget. Never forgive.

To those who say "it's her choice" I used to say the same thing about my own Hijab. I was covered head to toe. Even on the beach. Even with my male relatives. And when people challenged me, I said: this is my choice. You know why? Because the other option was burning in hell, hung by my hair for eternity. That's what they taught me since childhood. Yes, let me repeat it for you to just understand about our version of “freedom of choice.” I grew up in an Islamist culture that gave me two options. Cover yourself and go to heaven. Or don't cover, and be hanged by your hair and burned in hell. Like when someone puts a gun to your head and says "you can go left or right", technically, yes, that's a choice. I picked heaven. I called it freedom. And I believed it, because that's what happens when fear is all you've ever known. And if you think I shouldn't be telling you my story, I don't care. I really, genuinely, from the bottom of my heart, don't care. The women still living under that "choice"? I care about them. #LetUsTalk
