Apartheid South Africa also used to say "Why are we are the world's most criticized state, despite being the only democracy in Africa with Western values, the only truly industrialized state in Africa, & ranked among the 20 most developed nations in the world"
NYT's Bret Stephens whines that Democrats know "Smotrich and Ben-Gvir" but not "the interior minister of Japan." Their "obsession" with Israel drives him "crazy." (Being politically informed on Israel is now anti-Semitic.)

Very grateful for my colleagues at @SOAS and especially @jrschlosberg. Last year we launched a new MA in human rights reporting. It was a gamble. This year my module on investigative reporting has 72 post grad students. A win for everyone.

Israeli "democracy": - 500,000 West Bank settlers can vote, but not the 3M Palestinians under occupation - 230,000 Israelis in occupied East Jerusalem can vote, but not the 350,000 Palestinians under their rule - The fewer than 2M Palestinians left in occupied Gaza cannot vote

Israelis go to the polls today to choose between different shades of right. I wrote about who’s who, what the (small) differences are between them, and the various scenarios for what the next government might look like. 972mag.com/israeli-election-…

A far more apt description of Gadi Eisenkot than @LucyWilliamson ‘s “centrist” and “left leaning”.
Gadi Eisenkot is the father of the so-called Dahyeh Doctrine used against southern suburbs of Beirut in '06: disproportionate retaliation and destruction of civilian infrastructure to establish deterrence. Then used in Gaza.

A national unity government could be possible. But it will be, as this one is now, a coalition of bitter rivals, who happened to be united on brutalising Palestinians
Former PLO official Xavier Abu Eid says Israel’s election outcome remains uncertain, with polls divided between Benjamin Netanyahu and Gadi Eisenkot. He suggests the two rivals could potentially form a national unity government despite their political differences.

One of the highlights of my time in Jordan was visiting UNWRA archives and examining the index cards and other records of the 750,000 Palestinians kicked off their land at the Nakba in 1948. They used to be kept in Gaza and were airlifted out at the beginning of the genocide- Israel has destroyed all the archives that remained. They form the best evidence for some form of reparations in the future and are now being scanned and digitalised

Perhaps they can be allowed to speak for themselves. Most do see themselves as Palestinian. Others fear the consequences of identifying as Palestinian, given the expulsion of 70% of the Palestinian population, 18 years of military rule until 1966 & huge numbers of demolitions
Many of the Arab citizens of Israel don’t identify as Palestinians. But Sky News will be Sky News.

This is extremely poor. The opposition bloc is not centrist leaning and definitely not left leaning. It contains some very right wing candidates. In temrs of policy regarding Palestinians there is little difference at all
The BBC’s Middle East correspondent frames the Israeli elections as Netanyahu against “leftist” and “centrist” figures like Eisenkot, whom she describes as “softly spoken” and “lowkey”. What she leaves out is that he’s a former general and the architect of the Dahiyeh Doctrine, which calls for disproportionate force and deliberate targeting of civilians and their infrastructure. In what world is that left wing?

How often do we need to say 'look up the work of Women Against Fundamentalism and stop being so deliberately ignorant of the work of women who spent years protesting political Islam while being slandered by the left and without running into the arms of violent racist patriarchs?'

300–400 afghanis ($4–5.50) for a day's work. That's what Farhad earns, when he finds work in Kabul. But sometimes seven or eight days pass without a job. He still has to pay rent, feed himself and send money home to his family of ten. Our latest Daily Hustle👇 bit.ly/4jCJYvC

Domestic terror and intimate partner abuse is a far more serious and widespread problem than other ‘security’ threats. The facts are known but resources are limited. The last few decades have gutted women’s organisations and failed to work on evidence for ‘needs based’ approaches.
A major new report by police chiefs has found that a rise in violence against women and girls is linked to "online influences" and harmful content. In its first national risk assessment - the report said at least 230,000 children and young people in relationships were victims of abuse. They also found domestic abuse remained the most significant threat and described the scale of violence as a "national emergency".

Al-Qaeda must be disappointed: it would have made the perfect promotional video for them
As expected, a U-turn. They seem to have finally recognized that the world would be watching a disabled man tied to a wheelchair being shot by US soldiers.
