Alaska's gov called for an investigation of the Dan Sullivan situation. Was the reported recruitment illegal?
Election experts say likely no. "Convincing somebody to run for office isn't a crime, even if their name happens to be the same as an incumbent," @_justinlevitt_ told me
Plus, the Other Dan Sullivan's ability to run is protected by the First Amendment, @ruthgreenwood told us.
Here's what you need to know about the Alaska situation and any legal issues that come up: bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c8vg…
An US gov lawyer gave the first timeline of where ICE moved Belgal after he was discharged.
Matters due to the timing of Belgal's emergency filing last night, and is critical for establishing which court has jurisdiction.
SDNY judge asked for updates on Wedesday.
Feel like this post quote isn't doing this young journalist's enthusiasm justice. If you read the article, he's reviving his local media ecosystem in a smart way - using TikTok to drive interest to the core product -- and clearly having fun doing it. More of this please!!
“I was asked the other day if local journalism was boring, and I was like, ‘It may be boring, but it’s necessary.’”

Luigi Mangione's state trial appears to be delayed from its September 8 start date, following an order from Judge Gregory Carro.
Mangione's team is attempting to have his case thrown out on double-jeopardy grounds.
"Mr Mangione, how do you now plead?" Judge Garnett asked the defendant before her.
Mangione leaned into the microphone and stated, simply: "Guilty."
My view from the courtroom for the dramatic end to Mangione’s federal case:

Luigi Mangione is set to appear in federal court at 11 am today, as reports of a potential plea deal have anticipation high.
We don’t know what will happen, but @bbcnadatawfik and I will be inside the hearing for the BBC.
Right now, the Mangione plea reports are preliminary.
Here’s what would happen if a deal is in fact discussed today - it would certainly have knock on effects for his state trial that is scheduled in less than a month:

Mangione's pre-trial hearing begins.
Judge Carro opens with a strong rebuke of defense claims about public access to proceedings. Says defense's claims are "are without merit" and "reflect a reckless mischacterization" of court transparency efforts.
Carro also rebukes the Manhattan DA's office, who expressed concerns about illegal recording in a Mangione trial overflow room. Says its not their "first rodeo" with a high profile case, and phones are strictly banned.
As if on cue, a phone immediately goes off in the courtroom.
NEW: The trial of Nicolas Maduro is scheduled to start on June 1, 2027 in Manhattan federal court.
His defense signals they will make a motion to argue sovereign immunity later this year.

Fans told the BBC what they paid for World Cup tickets - and why some felt it was worth it
"I've been a huge soccer fan my whole life, and it's mostly due to dad," one Norway fan told the BBC of splurging to take his 82-year-old father to a match.
"I can't be like, 'no, let's do it next time, or somewhere else'. So, we're very excited." bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cy73…
