Early this morning in Crown Heights, Detective Robert Carroll was shot in the line of duty. I visited Detective Carroll at the hospital today, and I’m grateful his bulletproof vest protected him from more serious injury. I’m keeping him and his loved ones in my thoughts as he recovers.
I’m thankful to Detective Carroll and every member of the NYPD working to keep New Yorkers safe through a busy holiday weekend.
Every New Yorker deserves to come home safely at the end of the day. My administration will continue using every tool available to stop the scourge of gun violence and get illegal guns off our streets.

BREAKING: Mayor Zohran Mamdani says New York City will continue enforcing its sanctuary city policies and will not be complicit in federal civil immigration enforcement.
“We do not allow ICE agents into our schools, our hospitals, or city property without a judicial warrant signed by a judge,” Mamdani said. “We are proud of our heritage as an immigrant city.”
For many immigrant families, those policies are intended to ensure they can seek medical care, send their children to school, and access city services without fear.

The graduating class of East River Academy earned their diplomas while incarcerated on Rikers Island. They chose to pursue an education because they understand their futures cannot be constrained by their circumstances.
Even in the face of extraordinary adversity, these graduates kept moving forward with faith in their potential.
