Counties names meanings continued.. ○Mayo = Maigh Eo The “plain of the yew.” ○Meath = An Mhí The illustrious seat of the High Kings, this royal county's name humbly translates to “the middle.” ○Monaghan = Muineachán There are several interpretations for this home of poets and novelists. Most of them roughly translates to “the hilly/busy field/land" ○Offaly = Uíbh Fhailí Known as the Gaelic territory of Ui Failghe before English Queen Mary Tudor inserted her bloody sectarian nose into the mix (again). She renamed this territory "Kings County", after her husband Philip of Spain. ○Roscommon =Ros Comáin A beautiful county steeped in ancient tradition, its name means “Comán’s wood” after St. Comán who founded the monastery there in 550. Also called The Sheep Stealers, as Roscommon was home to many cattle rustlers who would cross the River Shannon to raid Westmeath and Longford. Thousands of those thieves would be "transported" to Australia as punishment. ○Sligo = Sligeach “The place of shells”. Before drunk tourists could hire expensive boats they cant pilot, this lush, river-rich county was known for its traditional shellfish-centred economy. ○Tipperary=Tiobraid Árann “The well of the Arra,” after the eponymous river. ○Tyrone =Tir Eoghain “The land of Eoghan.” After King Eogan mac Néill, of the kingdom of Ailech. ○Waterford= Port Láirge “Larag’s port” and also the Norse horned term “ram fjord.” ○Westmeath =An Iamhí Remember Meath/Middle? Well, this is “the west middle.” ○Wexford =Loch Garman More Norse geographical terms “the fjord of the mud flats.” The Model County name doesn't refer to how sexy the locals are, but rather their history of agriculture and the "Model Farms" method. ○Wicklow=Cill Mhantáin “Church of the Mantan", mantan meaning “toothless one,”. How glamorous is that? The aforementioned dentally-challenged individual was a saint whose chompers were knocked out whilst he was working for St. Patrick. The slightly nicer title is "The Garden of Ireland".
