From One Mic Black History In 1955, Rod Serling tried to air “Noon on Doomsday,” a drama about Emmett Till's murder. But TV executives were reluctant to offend Southern corporate sponsors. Serling realized he couldn't show a white mob killing a Black man on national TV. But if he made the victims green aliens, the sponsors wouldn’t complain. So he used science fiction to smuggle civil rights, McCarthyism, and the realities of war right past the white folks.
