BREAKING: Exxon Mobil has shut down one of the largest diesel refineries in the Midwest, which produces ~11 million gallons of gasoline and diesel fuel per day, due to outage issues.
This comes as diesel prices have already surged nearly 90% this year and the US has entered peak diesel demand season.
We expect to see diesel prices push toward $7.00/gallon.

You’re still missing the point: presidents do not set the price at the pump. Gasoline prices are driven primarily by global crude-oil markets—world supply, demand, refinery capacity, inventories, shipping, and geopolitical disruption.
But presidents can absolutely influence those markets through foreign policy, negotiations, sanctions, military decisions, and emergency-stockpile policy.
Start in 2020. When COVID crushed travel and economic activity, oil demand collapsed and the market was flooded. U.S. producers were getting hammered. Trump pressured Saudi Arabia and OPEC+ to reverse the Saudi-Russia price war and cut supply; Reuters reported that he warned Saudi leadership he could not prevent congressional action to withdraw U.S. military support if production was not reduced. OPEC+, including Russia, then agreed to the largest coordinated oil-production cut on record: 9.7 million barrels per day in May and June 2020, with smaller cuts continuing afterward into 2022.
Biden inherited a market still recovering from the pandemic, with production constraints and falling global inventories as demand returned. By early 2022, the market was already tight. Then Russia invaded Ukraine. The war, sanctions, disruptions in Russian energy trade, and already-low inventories helped push crude prices sharply higher. That is a much more honest explanation for the 2022 surge than pretending one president woke up and set gas to $5.. but you idiots on the daily blame Biden …
And the same principle applies now. The Iran war and attacks affecting Gulf shipping and regional oil infrastructure have disrupted energy markets. The Strait of Hormuz is not a minor detail—it is one of the world’s most important oil-transit routes. Restrictions on shipping, attacks on vessels, and damage to Saudi export infrastructure add supply and risk premiums to global oil prices.
So no, Trump does not personally control the number on your local gas-station sign. Neither did Biden. But it is also false to say presidential policy is irrelevant. Trump’s 2020 pressure campaign helped produce a historic OPEC+ cut; his administration’s current conflict with Iran is occurring alongside disruptions to shipping and oil infrastructure. Those decisions affect global oil markets, and global oil markets affect gasoline and diesel prices.
That is the point: the president doesn’t set gas prices—but policy, diplomacy, wars, and market disruptions absolutely help shape them… and each of our historical gas costs and oil prices have largely been due to choices made by the current administration
