The problem is that Ethiopia is launching drone attacks across the border against civilian and military sites inside Sudan. That's an act of war, even if done in support of the RSF. This is another discussion that the UN Security Council would be right to examine. sudantribune.com/article/320…

There is not enough focus on where the RSF drone are being launched and piloted from: Chad, Libya, Ethiopia. They are just as complicit as the countries manufacturing and selling the r drones.

So why would the U.S. back for the role of UN Secretary-General a person like @Lana_Nusseibeh who has been complicit in this slaughter? Is nothing disqualifying?
One year ago, the RSF committed horrific atrocities in El Fasher. Civilians were killed, beaten, raped and tortured during the RSF’s assault on the city. One year later, civilians across Sudan continue to suffer. Drone strikes kill and injure scores of civilians across the country almost daily. Civilians are forced to leave their homes and their livelihoods. And severe food insecurity is spreading. The United States mourns the loss of life due to the conflict in Sudan and is working every day to advance efforts towards lasting peace. Foreign military support to the belligerents must cease, aid workers must have unhindered humanitarian access, and civilians must be protected and able to return to their homes. Perpetrators of atrocities must be held to account. The Sudanese people have suffered enough; they deserve to live their lives without constant fear of violence.

A global campaign has been launched in opposition to the nomination of Emirati Minister of State Lana Nusseibeh for UN Secretary-General. Accompanied with the hashtag #NoToLana and paired with the online platform notolana.com, the campaign gathers evidence, testimonies, and international voices to mobilise global public opinion against her candidacy. "The future of the UN is too important to be decided in isolation from global public opinion," said Sudanese government advisor Amgad Faried. Despite being framed by allies as breakthrough for female representation and Arab leadership, Nusseibeh's bid has sparked a fierce backlash from Sudanese and Palestinian people, alongside feminists and human rights defenders. “The idea that [Nusseibeh] acts as the UN Secretary-General is one of the most dangerous threats to the global multilateral system and international law,” argued veteran Sudanese feminist Hala Al-Karib. In 2023, the UAE-backed Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a militia notorious for mass rape that the UN has accused of g*nocide waged war against the Sudanese state. While Nusseibeh led the UAE's mission to the UN, it reportedly "kept Sudan off the agenda" and used its influence to shut Sudan out of meetings about Sudan. "Lana has been the UAE's chief diplomat denying [UAE support for the RSF] and defending the regime," argued former US diplomat Cameron Hudson, who described her candidacy as "an insult to 50 million Sudanese." Mark Leon Goldberg, editor-in-chief of UN Dispatch, questioned how the UN can maintain its integrity, asking: "Does she side with the UN experts who've reported on UAE links to the genocidal [RSF], or does she continue to tow the UAE line and deny it (all evidence to the contrary)?" Guardian columnist Nesrine Malik warned that Nusseibeh's election would betray the UAE's victims. "Appointing a representative widely seen as one of the authors of Sudan’s tragedy to such a prestigious post... is a new chapter, one in which a perpetrator [is] crowned. Nusseibeh’s appointment can only be secured by stepping over the dead, and turning backs on the living," she wrote.

Sudanese army source says more than 27 strategic drones have been shot down since the RSF began using them. According to the source, the RSF obtained Chinese-made CH-95 and FH-95 drones through the UAE. They are launched from Nyala in Sudan, Umm Jaras in Chad and Kufra in Libya, with Ukrainian crews operating them. Other drones take off from Bahir Dar and Asosa in Ethiopia, with Ethiopian experts involved. Having lost ground on the battlefield, the RSF has turned to drones to strike Sudan’s power stations, oil facilities and infrastructure. Behind these attacks stand Emirati money, Chinese weapons, foreign crews and bases in three neighbouring countries. Sudan’s army, however, continues to defend its skies. @alalmyalsudani khartoumwire.com/2026/10/sud…

If your neighbour keeps sending drones to destroy your infrastructure and you take neither military, diplomatic or economic action against them then they are going to keep doing it because you’ve demonstrated to them that the cost is zero. It does not take a master strategist to realise this!! The ladder of escalation on this should have started the moment the origin of the first drone was confirmed.
If indeed it is concluded that Sudan is being struck from Ethiopian Airbases (at the behest of the UAE) as appears to be the case. Then Sudanese Airspace should be immediately closed to Ethiopian Aircraft and Airlines. There is strategic patience and there is weakness; failure by the Sudanese Gov to adopt any formal diplomatic or economic response to strikes originating from Ethiopia will be interpreted as weakness and will lead to further belligerent escalation.

Drones reportedly launched from Ethiopia are striking Sudan's power and oil facilities with growing precision, using fewer drones each time. In the latest attack, three drones targeted a petroleum pumping station in Haya, Red Sea State. According to Al Hadath's correspondent, an oil pipeline was hit, causing damage and an oil leak. Last night, residents of Gedaref, on the Ethiopian border, also heard drones overhead. Sudanese military sources say the drones that struck five power stations yesterday were also launched from Ethiopia. If the Sudanese army retaliates on Ethiopian soil, the region could be dragged into one of its biggest wars in recent years. That outcome serves the UAE and Israel, which want no stable power left standing in the Horn of Africa.

There is no military solution to the conflict in Sudan, or anywhere else. But neither is there a solution in forcing the Sudanese people to submit to the military blackmail of the UAE-backed RSF militia, its civilian allies, and the foreign powers standing behind them in Abu Dhabi and elsewhere. The Sudanese people did not choose this war. It was chosen by criminals, unleashed by a militia determined to swallow the Sudanese state whole, and fuelled by the political ambitions of those who, having lost their political relevance, came to believe that Sudan was theirs to possess. The continued use of atrocities and systematic abuses as instruments of political coercion will never produce peace. These crimes are an evil in themselves, and no political settlement can be built upon rewarding those who commit them. The way out of the catastrophe that has engulfed Sudan and its people begins with a fundamental, non-negotiable demand: that we have a state of our own, that we can live safely within it, and that we can, at the very least, sleep in our own homes without fear. We can disagree later about how that state should be governed. But we cannot accept the partition and fragmentation of our country, the displacement and plunder of our people, or the rape of our women and girls. Nor can we accept that those responsible for these crimes should be celebrated, legitimised, and ushered into political processes, as officials of the Abu Dhabi regime are so determined to do. Peace cannot mean compelling the victims to surrender to their tormentors, or turning the perpetrators’ atrocities into political leverage.
