Tomorrow is Burns Night, when Scotland honours its greatest poet.
But Robert Burns wasn't just writing poems — he was reviving the Scots language.
Scots was once spoken by kings — but it was cast aside.
Here's the untold tale of English's closest cousin, and how it survived 🧵

Julia raises an issue here that, as a writer on activism (alastairmcintosh.com/riderso… or alastairmcintosh.com/spiritu…) deeply vexes me. I’ve felt that 9/11 was a turning point. The old ways no longer work with the same effect. We must be deeper and more creative. Follow her thread down.
Replying to @JKSteinberger
I should have added: I have come to the conclusion that classic protest, even non-violent direct action cannot win (alone) against this kind of organised opposition. Violence itself is out of the question, for a whole host of reasons. But lots of strategies have not been tried.

Radical Community Wealth Building doesn’t happen overnight and this project is tentatively incorporating all five key principles.
A good deal of financial support from the energy sector has allowed the community to take ownership of assets to profit, sustainably, from tourism.

Wow. Epic storytelling. And not a fact/figure in sight. Sure - that must come. But the power of story through film is something the SNP/ indy movement must embrace.

As a professional in these matters, remote and rural communities need housing, good jobs, better education and healthcare provision, and better access to public transport, as well as many other things, over and above one and two pence coins.
Access to cash is vital for rural economies.
@hmtreasury's decision to not order new 1p and 2p coins risks isolating those without access to digital payment options: the elderly, the less well-off, and those in remote areas.

Are you listening @Aberdeenshire ?
Mothballing is closure by the backdoor. There are safeguards in place for closing schools. These safeguards are there for a reason and should not be circumvented.
Mothballing destroys communities. Small rural schools matter.
