The Name of Christ: Meetinghouses across the world boldly and clearly declare the name of Jesus Christ on the entrance of our buildings. Earlier this month, a faithful young adult shared an insight with us during a stake conference in Denmark about the importance of recognizing and remembering Jesus Christ even before entering the chapel to worship Him. That reminder rests with His name on the entrance of our Church buildings. Later that day we were able to see some of the inspiring images of the Savior by Danish painter Carl Bloch which seemed to crystalize this message of the Savior. Modern scripture teaches us, “For thus shall my church be called in the last days, even The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints” (Doctrine and Covenants 115:4). This is the Church of Jesus Christ. Christ’s name and image are not just a formality but signal our central focus to come unto Him. I’m grateful for this visual reminder from a young adult in Denmark.

The purpose of the temple is to unite individuals and families with Jesus Christ. It is the house of the Lord and a holy place where we make promises with God through sacred ceremonies. In temples, people learn about God’s plan of happiness with Jesus Christ at the center.

In 1987, during the Frankfurt Germany Temple open house, I had the opportunity to speak with a national German television network about my faith and why temples are so precious to members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I still remember the joy of bearing witness that the temple is the house of the Lord—a place of peace, covenants, and eternal hope. Next year, exactly 40 years after that interview, we will celebrate the renovated Salt Lake Temple. Through the years, my love for the Lord’s holy house has only deepened. Temples remind us that God’s plan is filled with light, purpose, and promise. We look forward with great joy to welcoming friends from around the world to come and see this beautiful and sacred house of the Lord.

Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and friends of our faith knew President Jeffrey R. Holland as a gifted teacher, an amazing leader, and an exceptional orator. To me, he was also a cherished friend and a wonderful example of what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ. This weekend, Harriet and I visited President Holland's grave site for the first time since his funeral earlier this year. It was a tender moment for us as we reflected again on the life of a truly remarkable man. President Holland and his beloved wife, Pat, have left behind a legacy of faith that will continue to inspire followers of the Savior for years to come. Through their unwavering testimonies and devoted service, they touched hearts across the world. Their example reminds us that a life centered on Jesus Christ endures long after we have departed this mortal journey.

During my address this week at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., I shared that living together in peace requires goodwill among those who differ. Knowing that we are all children of God gives us a divine vision of the worth of all others. I pray to our Heavenly Father for His blessings upon us that we will all seek to be peacemakers.

In Mosiah 2:41, we are reminded that the True Vine offers something far greater than any worldly pleasures—the promise to “dwell with God in a state of never-ending happiness.” #TheBookOfMormon #GeneralConference

When you decide to follow Jesus Christ, it is not because it is the easiest choice, the default option, or the path of least resistance.   That would prove nothing about you or about the virtues of His gospel.   At some point in every human life, you get the opportunity to show, by your choices, what really matters to you. You get to demonstrate just how much you love God and how earnestly you want to be with Him.   Last week, Harriet and I were thrilled to speak at the Provo Missionary Training Center with our remarkable missionaries—including our wonderful grandson Niklas—who are showing their love for God by choosing to serve others as missionaries for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.   For each of us who serves Jesus Christ, we get to demonstrate, by our consistent choices, that we believe in what we are building and that it will be monumental, even majestic.   Never be weary of well-doing. Instead, be joyful, be grateful, rejoice in the freedom to choose this wonderful work.

Many years ago, I was first counselor to a district president in the eastern United States. More than once, as we were driving to our little branches, he said to me, “Hal, when you meet someone, treat them as if they were in serious trouble, and you will be right more than half the time.” The Lord has opportunities near you to feel and to share His love. You can pray with confidence for the Lord to lead you to love someone for Him. As you do so, you will feel the love of God for you and for the person you serve for Him.
