To vote you must be a U.S. citizen, 18 by Election Day, and a Minnesota resident for at least 20 days before Nov. 3. Doing it now saves time later: mnvotes.gov/register 📆 Sep 18: Absentee voting begins No excuse needed. Request a mail ballot, or vote in person. County offices generally open Sep. 18; some city halls start Oct. 16. Check your site: sos.state.mn.us (search “voting locations before election day”). 📆 Oct 13: Pre-register deadline Last day for online or mail registration to be received so your name is already on the list. Miss it? You can still register in person when you vote, with proof of residence. 📆 Oct 16: Early voting starts This is the in-person period when many sites let you put your ballot straight into a tabulator. Same idea as Election Day, just earlier. 📆 Nov 2: Last day to vote early in person Also the last day to request an absentee ballot. Hours vary; many sites close at 5 p.m. Don’t cut it close. 📆 Nov 3: Election Day Polls 7 a.m.–8 p.m. If you’re in line at 8, you vote. Stay in line. Mail ballots must be received by 8 p.m. Election Day, not just postmarked. In-person absentee drop-off is generally due by 5 p.m. Same-day registration is available with proof of residence. Only 3% of Minnesota’s 201 legislative seats have a third-party or independent on the ballot. That is not a healthy choice. That is a locked door! Chip Tangen, raised in Eden Prairie, Libertarian candidate for Secretary of State, wants to change how candidates get on that ballot! One of his practical fixes is electronic petitions modeled on Arizona’s E-Qual system: eligible voters authenticate and sign online from home, instead of racing a short paper window with signatures that get thrown out for illegibility! At the League of Women Voters Roseville Area candidates forum for House Districts 44A and 44B on September 17, 2026, Independent candidate TJ Hawthorne got a direct question on data privacy: what protections should Minnesota require for how government agencies collect, keep, and share personal information; including facial recognition and other surveillance tech? His answer was blunt. He’s a Navy veteran, field service engineer, and Independent running in House 44B. On Flock cameras and government data harvesting, he said law enforcement and government are going too far! That private property owners can secure their own space, but the state is a different story. He also cited the idea that trading liberty for a little safety leaves you with neither (Ben Franklin) and said he’d support barring government from harvesting and using that kind of surveillance data.
