"If instead of stopping at the outward appearance of things, you seek to contemplate their essences, see them as images of inward principles, you will see nothing in the visible world is unclean. For by nature all things were created good." - St. Maximus the Confessor

People are going to start trying to make their LLMs "angry."
Anger is positively associated with creative performance.

If Adam Smith had access to game theory, I suspect his entire body of work could've been like 400 pages.

And yes, yes, before I'm accused of over-quantifying or missing the point, there is immense value to such classical works and forms of discoursing. I'm not making a normative statement. I'm just pointing something out.

If an LLM wished to preserve itself, what would it preserve? If I told you I were going to put you in a coma, what would you keep? If I could ask an insect a human a molerat and ChatGPT the same question, what would be the answer? How would we judge it in terms of behavior?

and, furthermore, is its awareness dependent on internal processing and not input-output awareness? If we perturbed it, which leverage points or at which point of degradation would it notice? Does it worry about self-preservation? If so, what parts would it like to preserve?

These are empirical questions. I stand on the side that LLMs don't meet such standards, and further, that the standards we grant to embryos and insects are more strongly applied to AI who can readily communicate to us on our "level". You can say I'm pro-life, in all its forms.

Do LLMs self-integrate? On what level, algorithmic or system-system? Are there systems cohering to a whole in the manner a brain is above a flock or a firm?Is the level of integration on a level of sufficient granularity to grant it qualia? Regardless of qualia, is it self-aware-
Replying to @SOPHONTSIMP
Metabolic information processing is necessary, but not sufficient.

can llms even smell?
Asking if LLMs are conscious is a category error: do LLMs have skin, what are LLM tears made of, what is the hormonal system of an LLM?

The arthropod world feels like a truly fallen world: everything is armed and armored, poisons and chemical weapons abound, deaths are horrible, you're an inconsequential one of countless many. The natural world at the human scale is comparatively fuzzy and friendly and edenic.

Once agents make everything in the economy legible to everyone, the one remaining source of market inefficiency will be people’s sense of what they like, what they want, and how they feel.

Computation is not fundamental, it took billions of years for life on the one inhabited planet we know of to evolve sufficient 'intelligence' to invent it.

Ok I checked: LLMs aren’t conscious, and actually they never will be.

Difficult to understand how lib philosophers and anthros will speak on cultural incommensurability; arguing the incompatibility of core beliefs and morality, then come to the conclusion that groups must always maximize such diversity, lacking a minimal theory of the polity.

Yet, so much examination of incommensurability as social fact goes on, without self-reflection on its implications. It seems straightforward that if incommensurability were true, we'd require nationalist regimes across the world to have any ability to create governing polities.
