Day 6: Pika-Parasite
A wild “Pikachew” appeared! Each spring our crews set traps that work like the GLFC’s Pokédex, tracking #sealamprey numbers in a combo with lampricides and barriers that’s super effective!
Voting starts tomorrow!

Day 5: Par-Athena
Our Athena-inspired #lamproweenie knows epic journeys, slipping through shipping canals like a Trojan horse to invade the #GreatLakes. But there was no homecoming for these voyagers once the GLFC formed in 1955 to fight back!
#Lamproween #invasivespecies
Day 4: Blood-Sucker Steve
Today’s #lamproweenie spawned in as Steve from Minecraft, a pixelated parasite that griefs #GreatLakes fish. But #sealamprey control will nether give up, until the End! ⛏️
Thanks to the creative Calder Miehls for the idea!

ALT A sea lamprey dressed is a Halloween costume like Steve from Minecraft. The sea lamprey is wearing a teal shirt and blue pants and holding a pickaxe. Next to the sea lamprey is a pink sheet. In the top the word “Lampcraft” is written in the Minecraft font. All parts of the picture are pixilated.
Day 3: Little Lamp of Horrors
This strange & interesting plant, er, fish, once devastated #GreatLakes fisheries, but the #SeaLamprey Control Program now stops this #invasive bloodthirsty bloom before it sprouts teeth!
Thanks to Christina Contreras Stone for the idea!
#Lamproween
Day 2: The Legend of Slimy Hollow
Beware the Headless Horsefish of Slimy Hollow, a nonnative nightmare that latches onto #GreatLakes fish with a disc full of teeth. The #SeaLamprey Control Program keeps it from riding roughshod over fisheries!
#Lamproween #invasivespecies
Day 1: Tedromyzon Lassinus
#Lamproween is back & we’re starting with a mustachioed macroparasite with a motivational message. Believe in believe!
Thanks to Jill Wingfield & Scott Miehls for ideas!
Look for a new #lamproweenie (costumed #sealamprey) daily, then vote on #Halloween!

ALT A photo of a sea lamprey wearing a clipart-style costume made to look like the character Ted Lasso from the TV show of the same name. The sea lamprey is wearing a white visor and a blue track jacket, has a mustache, and is holding a soccer ball and a mug with the word “Believe” on it. Stadium seating is visible in the background.
Congratulations to GLFC’s Leah McCallum and the @MSUExtension and AgBioResearch State Advisory Council on receiving the 2026 MSU Extension Key Partner Award! Leah serves as Public Engagement Officer for FishPass.

#DidYouKnow that when aquatic biologists scan fish with handheld PIT tag readers, they’re picking up tiny, implanted tags that reveal a fish’s ID, history, and movements? A quick beep helps track many species of fish. 🐟📡

Who ya gonna call? 👻
If you spot someone in a stream with what looks like a proton pack, they’re not busting ghosts—they’re electrofishing. A mild shock brings larval #sealamprey to the surface so control agents can count them & protect #GreatLakes fisheries.
