November 2026 is National Native American Heritage Month.  The Board of Larimer County Commissioners proclaimed November as National American Heritage Month to coincide with the national designation.  “This is just not a proclamation. It’s a call to action. This is an opportunity for us to do better to acknowledge the people who lived on this land before we did and their culture and rich history,” said Larimer County Commissioner Kristin Stephens.  “Our proclamations mirror and align with our values as a board to promote belonging, which we feel is important in Larimer County and something we strive to lead with every day,” said Larimer County Commissioner Jody Shadduck-McNally.  The native history in Colorado is an important part of our state’s identity and is a strong and vibrant part of its culture, and we acknowledge the rich history and significant contributions to our community.

Join Us at the Table  The Board of Larimer County Commissioners today proclaimed the month of October as Long-Term Care Residents’ Rights Month in Larimer County.  This year’s theme is “Join Us at the Table,” to highlight the importance of food and mealtimes in residents’ daily lives.  “I have a little experience in this right now, since my mom is in long-term care, and mealtime is really special. When I visit, she sometimes has an eye on the clock because she wants to go hang with her ‘crew,’ as I call them,” said Larimer County Commissioner Kristin Stephens. “That is one of her bigger parts of her day and gives her a lot of joy, so I know that mealtime is important in long-term care.”    There are 1.2 million individuals living in 14,700 nursing homes, with over 1 million also living in 32,000 assisted living/residential care facilities in the U.S.  “It’s the little things like sitting around the table with something they like to eat and other things that make their stay more like a home that are important,” said Larimer County Commissioner Jody Shadduck-McNally. Mealtimes and sharing food are an important part of how these residents interact, create and maintain friendships, and share their stories while enhancing their sense of community.
