I've been reading Project 2025. As @veronikellymars points out, a lot of stuff in there is already happening. We're living the test run.
To stay sane, I made a podcast. I'm talking with people who are confronting authoritarianism, resisting that sense of impending doom. First ep:

Right now! Join @nate_rosenfield and I for an AMA about a group of Mississippi sheriffs deputies known as the “Goon Squad.” Dozens of witnesses say that for years, these deputies tortured suspects during low-level drug busts.

Anybody would be lucky to work alongside @CeeLei @LauraWenus @KeithMenconi & @garybaca_oak. If you’re looking for talented, dedicated and thoughtful audio journalists, please let me know so I can sing their praises.
Yes, it's goodbye. The final episode of @FifthandMission is a thoughtful farewell from @CeeLei. Like many talented audio makers right now, all of us on the team will be figuring out our next steps as the Chronicle ends its podcasts.
It's been a privilege.

These layoffs affect the @SFNext team too, which I was also part of. Difficult times all around, and it's happening in too many newsrooms. But I feel lucky I got to work with @CeeLei @KeithMenconi @garybaca_oak @noah_arroyo @audrey_my_brown @AdrianaRezal and @CintiaLopez916 .
On a happier note, if you'd like to meet in person, come join the Fifth & Mission team at the PRX Podcast Garage! We'll be there Nov. 15th. Details at this link, plus some ways to get in touch if you can't make it: sfchronicle.com/podcasts/art…

Whelp, that didn't last long.
Second time working for a Bay Area newspaper. Second time getting hit by a mass layoff within the first three months. Oof.
So sorry for all my talented colleauges who lost their jobs yesterday, as well. Oof X 8.

I'll be leaving the Chronicle soon. Like so many others, I'm trying to figure out where to step next in this fraught moment for media. Totally unclear where our craft is headed.

In this time of heated political debate in the Bay Area, have you lost friendships over politics or struggled to discuss divisive issues, even with those on the same end of the political spectrum? We’d like to hear from you! DM us or email us at [email protected].
Okin's book "Silent Voices" is a tough read. You get a sense for what people are going through, which is a tough reality to face. But what makes it weirdly harder is when folks in such dire straits are also deeply generous.

We talked about this in the episode: it's always nice to be able to do a positive story. I'm referring to the program showing promise, but also, these folks are a really good roommate match and that in itself is a lovely thing ☺️
