The DCU is starting to ask a pretty interesting question: are superheroes actually good for the cities they save? Lanterns writer Justin Britt-Gibson says that by 2026, superheroes have become something of a nuisance. John Stewart is even designing shelters to protect people from the destruction surrounding superhero events. JUSTIN BRITT-GIBSON: “These superheroes have to, like, lay waste to cities just to save the city.” For Britt-Gibson, that gives Lanterns a chance to re-contextualize superheroes and explore how ordinary people living in this world actually see them.

Some folks are going to hate on Hal's dad killing himself but I actually think it added so much contextual background to THIS version of Hal, he's not just cynical, melancholic or sad because he's old and bitter.. It's long engraved trauma kicking in, and after years of watching people die it only makes more sense #Lanterns

Hal spent 67 years across the comics and every cartoon (GL: TAS, Justice League, etc.) being obsessively in love with Carol Ferris his boss, his Star Sapphire, the woman who literally tried to kill him out of heartbreak. Giving him a secret small-town sheriff girlfriend instead, then having Carol show up to his funeral like an afterthought, is the most “we don’t actually like the source material” decision the DCU has made so far.
