Huge SEO News: OpenAI released a new research paper on how people use ChatGPT in 2026. More people are using ChatGPT like an answer engine than ever before: So this was a big drop from OpenAI yesterday. Last year they created a research report on how people are using ChatGPT with real-user data. Well it looks like they updated that study to reflect how actual users are leveraging ChatGPT for work activities. This report has a lot of really interesting takeaways for SEO + marketers in general: 1. More and more people are using ChatGPT as an answer engine specifically. Practical Guidance (28%) + Seeking Information (20%). Together, those make up 48% of all messages. 2. Seeking Information was the biggest growth area. It started at 16% in July 2024 and grew to 20%. 3. People using ChatGPT for Writing has declined A LOT. In July 2024, this was 34% of all messages. Now it's down to just 21%. 4. Technical support has also plummeted. It started at 13% of messages and is now down to just 4%. Claude has almost certainly taken it's place here. 5. "Making decisions and problem solving" is still the largest category at 19%. However, this has shrunk down from 23% back in 2024. 6. More decision-making users are leveraging ChatGPT. Users who were 45+ rose from 11% to 20% while under 25 shrunk from 42% to 26%. So huge study here! Definitely worth looking into if you want to analyze how people are leveraging ChatGPT.

Google's API leak revealed the "matchedScore" attribute, the magic backlink 1) Google sees 100 suspicious links and labels then spam 2) Google sees 100 sus links + one TRUSTED link w/ similar anchor text and trusts *all of them* Perhaps why big sites get away with spammy links

We now have a statement from @ahrefs regarding Google poisoning the search results and the overall tracking issues they are facing. I followed up with ahrefs to see if graphs will change, and be corrected, based on the cleanup they mentioned in the post. Stay tuned. "We already have multiple filters in place to detect and reject the abnormal results and request accurate replacements. We're also cleaning up any past results that may have been affected." ahrefs.com/blog/serp-data-up…

#LocalSEO is getting conversational. Google's Ask Maps can answer "Italian restaurant nearby that's quiet enough for a business meeting." Here's how to make your business the one it recommends: searchengineland.com/google-…

The entire paper is basically an LLM book report on my August 2025 book, Strategic AI SEO, with a "GEO" sticker slapped on the cover. The irony being, I wrote that book to specifically call the process AI SEO and NOT GEO lol.

Hilo:

Google about Crawl Budget (and specifically Crawl Demand). From Google Search Central Live Barcelona (via John Campbell of ROAST) -> When Google doesn’t know the quality or popularity of a URL, it uses the aggregate for its parent path. Then that path’s parent, and so on. weareroast.com/news/google-s…

Google’s 2024 Content Warehouse leak lists an internal attribute called `contentEffort` inside page-quality data. The leaked description calls it an “LLM-based effort estimation for article pages.” Public Google Search Quality Rater Guidelines already instruct evaluators to judge main content by “the amount of effort, originality, and talent or skill” that went into it, and to give the lowest rating when nearly all the main content is auto- or AI-generated without manual oversight, curation, or added value. The leak supplies a plausible internal name for the signal the guidelines describe. No SEO knows the weight Google actually assigns it. The practical test is replication cost. A page that can be reproduced in minutes by scraping feeds, lightly rewriting existing results, or running an unedited prompt scores low. A page that requires proprietary data, original measurements, custom tools, first-hand reporting, or specialist judgment that is expensive to recreate scores high. AI assistance itself is neutral; the score depends on the uniqueness of the inputs and the human editing applied afterwards (HITL - Human in the Loop). High-effort pages are also harder for answer engines to ignore. Models synthesising an overview prefer sources that add information not already present in the consensus, so original data or analysis raises the chance of citation. The same standard applies whether the reader is a person or a system. References research and commentary by myself on @Hobo_Web and @trysearchable, with further independent researchers championing a closer look at Content Effort, including @CyrusShepard and @seosmarty. If you are an SEO nerd and want to find out more about Google's Content Effort score, or the contentEffort attribute found in the Google Content Warehouse API data leak, I have a roundup on X:
Find out all about one of Google's primary "Effort" signals: Content Effort.
