40 years ago today, maybe the most memorable baseball game in the modern history of the sport was played…
Game 6 of the 1986 World Series.
A game where the conventional wisdom is that Bill Buckner cost the Red Sox the game by letting a ground ball go through his legs. However there are HUGE problems with this narrative.
The first is that the game was tied, so even if he makes a fantastic play, the game goes on with the Mets having a huge advantage.
The second is, I will go to my death KNOWING that, even if Buckner fields the ball perfectly, Mookie Wilson, a speedster who got an insanely good jump, would have beaten him to the bag. Look how soon after the ball goes through Buckner’s legs that Wilson ROUNDS first base!
It is amazing to me that this point has been largely lost to history.
