In 1817, when the cholera morbus epidemic was spreading in Calcutta and the surrounding areas, Lieutenant-Colonel Fitzclarence observed that tents were filled with people who were sick, dying, or already dead. What disturbed him was not only the physical horror of the situation but what he perceived as the lack of mutual sympathy among the native population. He says that people often appeared apathetic toward one another, and that there was little visible effort to comfort or care for fellow sufferers. Only in one or two cases, relatives showed considerable anxiety and emotional concern for the sick person. When the patient recovered, their gratitude deeply affected him. They expressed it in a spontaneous and traditional manner; throwing themselves at his feet and embracing his knees. He describes this response as “primitive” and “untutored,” meaning that he considered it an unpolished but sincere expression of emotion.
