ALT Cylch Ieithyddiaeth Bangor Linguistics Circle. 24/04/24, 16:00. Darlithfa 2. Prif Adeilad y Celfyddydau. Lecture room 2, Main Arts Building. And online/ac ar-lein. Yr Athro/Professor Antonella Sorace Prifysgol Caeredin, Edinburgh University & Bilingualism Matters. 'Eliminating the native monolingual norm in research on bilingualism'

ALT Linguistics research has traditionally been shaped by the concept of native monolingual speaker. Research on bilingualism and language learning has also defined attainment levels (e.g. “near-native speakers”) and differences (‘advantages’ or ‘disadvantages’) with respect to native monolingual norms. However, interdisciplinary experimental research on language learning and language change across the lifespan is deconstructing the notion of the native monolingual speaker as a default point of reference: it has shown not only that a speaker’s first language (L1) changes in selective and reversible ways upon exposure to a second language (L2) but also that the aspects of L1 grammar affected by change are the same that remain variable even in highly proficient L2 speakers of the same language. This selective convergence between L1 change and L2 acquisition suggests the existence of an L1-L2 ecology which may be functional to active bilingualism and may have consequences for bilingualism

ALT Mae ymchwil ieithyddol wedi cael ei siapio’n draddodiadol gan y cysyniad siaradwyr brodorol unieithog. Mae ymchwil ar ddwyieithrwydd a dysgu ieithoedd hefyd wedi diffinio lefelau cyrhaeddiad (e.e. siaradwyr bron yn frodorol) a gwahaniaethau (e.e. ‘manteision’ ac ‘anfanteision’) o ran i normau siaradwyr brodorol unieithog. Beth bynnag, mae ymchwil arbrofol rhyngddisgyblaethol ar ddysgu iaith a newid iaith dros oes yn dadadeiladu’r syniad o siaradwyr brodorol unieithog fel pwynt cyfeirio rhagosod: dangoswyd nid yn unig bod iaith gyntaf siaradwyr yn newid mewn ffyrdd detholus a childroadwy ar ôl amlygiad i ail iaith, ond hefyd bod agweddau gramadeg yr iaith gyntaf sy’n cael eu heffeithio gan newid ydy’r un ar rain sy’n aros yn amrywiol, hyd yn oed mewn siaradwyr tra hyfedr ail-iaith yn yr un ieithoedd (Sorace, 2011. 2016). Mae’r gydgyfeirio detholus rhwng newid iaith gyntaf a chaffael ail-iaith yn awgrymu’r fodolaeth ecoleg iaith gyntaf – ail-iaith...
