Gut wrenching news ๐
Ciara Mageean 1992 - 2026 ๐๏ธ
We are devastated to report that Ciara Mageean has died at the age of 34.
Last summer Mageean, who represented Ireland at two Olympics and stood on the podium at multiple major championships, revealed that she had cancer.
Her biggest victory came at the 2024 European Athletics Championships, where she secured the gold medal for Ireland in the 1500m.
A statement on her social media said: "At 6.30am this morning, Ciara lost her battle with cancer surrounded by her loved ones.
"A beloved daughter, sister, wife, friend and inspiration to so many, she will be deeply missed. Ar dheis Dรฉ go raibh a hanam."

The evolution of the menโs 400m hurdles has been extraordinary.
Here are the sub-47 performances by year (1990-2026).
From the dawn of time until 2017, there was just one sub-47.
In 2026 alone, there were 15.
For extra context:
2017 had just 1 sub-48.
2026 has had 58 sub-48s.
