Another senior elder of the Labor Party cries out for the Labor government to step back from the brink — and for all Australians to ‘Resist US bases!’
“Even in robust democracies these US military bases operate outside local democratic accountability, often according to rules and principles alien to the local population. And they rarely leave just because the host nation asks them to.”

Scores of trucks carrying new tents and caravans (mobile homes) have been waiting at Gaza's border for more than a year, but Israel has blocked them from entering despite a US-brokered and monitored ceasefire.
Israel’s deliberate and systematic cruelty to deprive displaced Palestinians of shelter and compound their suffering is part of an effort to drive Palestinians out of Gaza, and is continuing with full U.S. support.

I don’t know. It feels obscenely stupid to start posting videos of my loved ones in Gaza right now, as their tents flood with rainwater in the middle of the night, as they sleep in damp clothes on soaked mattresses, and to think for a f*cking second that these images might move someone to save their babies, to protect what little dignity they have left.
As if this time could be any different from last year, or the year before that, or the year before that.
As if people around the world, especially those with the power to do something, might suddenly be moved by a family’s tent flooding with rainwater when the sight of hundreds of babies whose bodies were shredded by Israeli bombs was not enough to put an end to this.
How many more times must we expose the suffering of the people we love, strip them of their privacy in their most vulnerable moments, in the desperate hope that someone, somewhere, might finally care enough to act?

Abdul El-Sayed’s remarks about ending US taxpayer funding for the genocide and apartheid of Palestinians and instead investing that money in the needs of everyday Americans prompted an audience member to break into an Arabic song in the middle of his speech at the Arab America Foundation’s CONNECT Empowerment Summit in Chantilly, Virginia tonight.

'To Prime Minister Anthony Albanese,
Australia is losing under the AUKUS security pact. The costs are spiralling, the benefits are unclear and we are surrendering our sovereignty to an increasingly volatile America. Two-thirds of Australians want greater scrutiny of AUKUS.
We call on you to establish a Royal Commission to conduct an independent investigation into how the AUKUS deal was made, how it is being implemented and whether it serves Australia’s best interests.'

Three years ago this article I wrote confirmed for the first time that the American spy base in Australia was helping Israel’s genocidal war on the Palestinians of Gaza.
But the Base is still open — it’s still doing the job — and 78,000 Gazans have since been slaughtered.
This article was not meant as a salve to the conscience of Australians, but as a call to action.

This is what governance based on principles looks and sounds like. We need more El-Sayeds, in every democracy. Let’s hope it will be the platform of the new US administration in 2028, and that governments in countries like Australia will then give themselves permission to reclaim some sovereignty and courage. It may all be too late however for millions of Palestinians who are being ethnically cleansed and continue to be brutally punished for existing by Israel. On top of getting away with doing this, the perpetrators must not be allowed to escape accountability. May all those who support them hang their heads in shame.
I've been in politics for a quarter century. It's hard to express how staggering it is to see a conversation like this on corporate US media. The Morning Joe panel gobsmacked by the directness of @AbdulElSayed's points.

The people of the United States have chosen their next slate of elected representatives at all levels of government, and their choices rang loud and clear.
Those elected, from community representatives to federal lawmakers, now bear a heavy burden as many lives and livelihoods, both inside and outside the United States, depend on their willingness to defend and protect human rights, democratic principles, and the rule of law.
All newly elected officials should choose accountability over impunity, equality over discrimination, and the full spectrum of people’s human rights over the arbitrary and unlawful exercise of power.

ALT Here is a polite and succinct alternative text description: A to-do list by Amnesty International titled "To-Do List for the New Congress" with ten numbered action items including abolishing ICE, defending free expression, ending funding for aerial operations, passing the Block the Bombs Act, stopping the Iran war, defending Ukraine, championing human rights, ending corruption, fighting for climate justice, regulating AI, and reversing Trump administration's withdrawal from international law. Background includes the U.S. Capitol dome.

🇺🇸🇮🇷 Abdul El-Sayed was confronted by a University of Michigan student whose family comes from Iran:
"My cousin was hunted by the IRGC because her hijab wasn't on right, my uncle was sentenced to die...
The terror that we've experienced is insurmountable.
I want to ask if you stand unequivocally against the IRGC and the Islamic Republic of Iran that has killed 50,000 protestors."
Abdul El-Sayed:
"One can disagree with the governance of a foreign country. One can stand in solidarity with freedom and democracy movements.
But my worry is when one decides that we can go in and take out the leadership of a foreign government.
I will always stand for and with democratic movements, always, but I also don't believe that we were in the right to go to war and topple the government of Iran.
It is up to the people of Iran to decide what their leadership should look like."
