Smoking cigarettes has to be the dumbest fucking vice imaginable. It doesn’t get you high or make you feel particularly good. It just leaves your mouth smelling like an ashtray and slowly poisons your body until you get cancer.

I still don't think Canadians appreciate just how crazy the unmarked grave allegations at Kamloops were. So I tried to sum it up as best as I could ... The unmarked graves at Indian residential schools mentioned by the Truth and Reconciliation predominantly refer to students who died of disease, usually tuberculosis and usually before 1930. They were then buried in onsite cemeteries with wooden markers, with the result that the grave location was lost when the marker rotted away. When you hear about graves being excavated at IRS sites, it's usually something like this. The Kamloops 215, from the start, was an entirely different thing. It purported to provide evidence of an insane blood libel that the Catholic Church was secretly murdering Indigenous children en masse as late as the 1960s. The specific "knowing" was that staff were disappearing Kamloops Indian Residential School students and burying them in the school's apple orchard in the middle of the night. This was despite the fact that nobody could actually name a specific student that had been disappeared in this fashion. What Kamloops did was equivalent to claiming that we finally had physical evidence of the Satanic ritual abuse panic. So, think of it like a Canadian hospital publicly claiming that they'd found an onsite mass grave filled with babies murdered by Satanists in the 1980s. Actual residential school deaths were employed as cover for an utterly bananas urban legend. And that's why, in 2021, Canada was thrown into a profoundly destructive cultural revolution from which we may never recover.

Every day yields some new systemic social horror that has never, ever happened in Canada before, and millions think the country is doing great. A nation's soul is dying before their eyes and they look away.

Final CBC thoughts for now: 1. The US attention, especially from the FBI and the Ambassador, spooked the hell out of officials here. CSIS, Public Safety and Marc Miller weighing in publicly like this, plus a very quick and public CBC reversal, is serious business. We can all stick our elbows up to the moon. We depend heavily on US intel and law enforcement for our national security and if you don't understand or appreciate that, grow the fuck up. You don't have to like Trump. 2. Nuance - CBC did use the terrorism descriptor for 9/11 without attribution somewhat regularly in the past, but this appears to have mostly stopped in recent years (someone else can verify this). This is the more important part to me because it coincides with the manner in which the CBC almost completely dropped its coverage of radical Islamist extremism in recent years. Just spend a few minutes searching the CBC website for "far right' or "white supremacist" extremism and see how much volume there is compared to radical Islamism. If you want to see any deeper dives on this topic beyond straight reports of arrests, you have to go back years ago. I wish other people would think about this more. I kvetch about it constantly. It should matter. 3. CBC as proxy for trade war trash talk and also broader security concerns - US officials see how the Carney government is characterizing the collapse in trade negotiations. "This was an attack." "It's war." US officials called our bluff, hard, and we blinked, hard. They know how Carney is pivoting to China and yes the Trump administration is blowing it with the constant threats and tariffs because they're mostly idiots, but none of that changes the bilateral security relationship and reality, and Canadians who shit on that, and Carney in particular who has now effectively been warned to mind his rhetoric, better take themselves down a notch. We don't have the capacity of the FBI, CIA or NSA and we have serious national security threats outside the orange menace. Also, today's news of the shooter of the US Consulate being let out on bail will be noticed. The US knows who our Public Safety Minister is and our record deporting IRGC officials. It is noticed that the US is intercepting Hezbollah fundraising schemes. It is noticed that we had a guy wanted by France for allegedly blowing up a Synagogue in Paris teaching at Carleton. It is noticed that our government, like the CBC, will not acknowledge the issue of radical Islamist terror by name. We better get our shit together and start being a serious country. The elbows and bullshit bluster aren't going to cut it. You can talk all the trash you want to the FBI and Ambassador on twitter. CSIS knows things you don't, and you better know what you don't know.

People really don't know how to drive anymore. Why are you hitting the brakes every five seconds when there's literally nothing in front of you? Just take your foot off the gas and let the car slow down. The constant brake-gas-brake-gas shit is so fcking annoying.

My optimism for Canada's future (and it's still high) is premised largely on my observation that all this constant humiliation is instilling a cold resolve that hasn't been seen in this country for decades. There's so much we can't unsee.

i don't know who needs to hear this but in order to become a better person, you must first realize how horrible you really are. not in the dramatic sense, but in the quiet ways you sabotage yourself, repeat unhealthy patterns, hurt people who care about you, or tolerate what wounds you. you cannot grow if you keep pretending you’re innocent in the story you created

Any genuine expression of nationalism actually terrifies Liberals because nationalism, by its nature, rejects the managed decline they're overseeing. Nationalists do not accept that a country's identity must be dissolved/diluted in the name of “progress.” True patriots understand that the nation they inherit is not an accident or a liability but something exceptional and destined for greatness. And it's definitely not something you need to apologize for. Liberals do not carry this instinct, so they offer a cheap substitute (see: Elbows Up.) That’s why the mainstream media reflexively labels authentic nationalism as “extreme,” while carefully ignoring the fact that what is actually extreme and abnormal is the post-national hell they have planned for us... The deliberate stripping away of identity, memory and belonging for some amorphous non-identity

The government won’t allow advertisements for cigarettes and you can barely promote alcohol. Why the hell can I not watch five minutes of a sports event without being inundated with gambling ads. This is killing our society. Destroying young men. Time to reframe this.

It's probably best for everyone in Canada if we stop pretending we'd win a hypothetical war with the United States. Our national weakness to constantly dwell in fantasy is why living standards are in freefall and people are dying in emergency rooms.
