arbitrum just pulled $30 million out of the binance hacker's wallet. the hacker never signed anything. here is how it happened. on friday the arbitrum security council, 12 people elected by arb token holders, voted to use its emergency powers. nine signatures was all it took. they sent one single transaction that temporarily replaced the code of arbitrum's inbox contract. the inbox is the bridge that carries messages from ethereum into arbitrum. the replacement code added a function called sendunsignedtransactionoverride. that function let the council push transactions that arbitrum treated as if they came from the hacker's own address. two of those moves shifted over 8,425 eth and 74 million arb into a holding address ending in 0da0. the original code was restored inside the same transaction, and the council published everything on the governance forum within an hour and a half. now here is the twist that should make every arbitrum user sit up. on any blockchain your money moves only when your private key signs. that rule now holds only up to whoever controls the upgrade path. $30 million is a rounding error next to the $6.3 billion drained from binance, the largest crypto theft on record. but the method is the real story here. a network that markets itself as decentralized just showed that nine people can move anyone's funds without their key. let that sink in. check who holds the emergency keys on every chain you use. know the upgrade path before you trust the chain with your money.
