Gait speed is the single most predictive physical measure of longevity. Researchers call it the sixth vital sign. Studies of over 35,000 older adults found that gait speed predicts survival more accurately than blood pressure, cholesterol, or body mass index.

Gait speed declines with age, but the rate of decline is modifiable. Sedentary individuals lose walking speed two to three times faster than active individuals. Strength training, particularly for the lower body, is the most effective intervention for preserving and improving gait speed.

Train gait speed through squats, lunges, calf raises, and step-ups. Practice walking at a brisk pace for at least 30 minutes daily. Include balance and coordination drills. If you can walk a mile in under 15 minutes comfortably, your gait speed is in a healthy range. Walk fast. Live long.

Prostate health is one of the most neglected areas of men's longevity. By age 60, over 50% of men have benign prostatic hyperplasia. By age 85, that number exceeds 90%. Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men worldwide. Prevention starts decades before symptoms appear.

Lycopene from cooked tomatoes is one of the most studied prostate-protective nutrients. Men who eat ten or more servings of tomato products per week have a 35% lower risk of prostate cancer. Cooking tomatoes in olive oil dramatically increases lycopene bioavailability. This is one of the simplest dietary interventions with the strongest evidence.

Support prostate health with lycopene-rich foods, zinc, selenium, and saw palmetto. Maintain a healthy body weight, as obesity increases prostate cancer risk. Exercise regularly, which reduces both BPH symptoms and cancer risk. Get screened appropriately starting at age 45 or earlier if you have family history.

Ketosis is a metabolic state where your body burns fat for fuel instead of glucose. Your liver converts fatty acids into ketone bodies, which can power the brain, heart, and muscles. Humans spent most of evolutionary history cycling in and out of ketosis. Modern diets keep us locked out of it.

Beta-hydroxybutyrate, the primary ketone body, is an epigenetic signaling molecule. It inhibits histone deacetylases, which upregulates genes involved in oxidative stress resistance and longevity. This means ketones do not just provide fuel. They actively reprogram gene expression toward cellular protection.

You do not need a strict ketogenic diet to benefit from ketosis. Time-restricted eating naturally produces mild ketosis each morning. A 24-hour fast puts most people into moderate ketosis. Exogenous ketone supplements can provide ketone benefits without dietary restriction. The goal is periodic access to this metabolic state, not permanent residence.

Growth hormone is the most powerful repair and regeneration signal in the human body. It drives muscle growth, fat metabolism, collagen synthesis, and tissue repair. Growth hormone peaks during puberty and declines roughly 15% per decade after age 30. By 60, most people produce a fraction of their youthful levels.

Fasting dramatically increases growth hormone secretion. Studies show growth hormone can increase by 300% after a 24-hour fast and up to 1250% after a 5-day fast. This is an evolutionary adaptation: when food is scarce, growth hormone preserves muscle and mobilizes fat for fuel.

Maximize natural growth hormone through deep sleep, high-intensity training, and periodic fasting. Avoid eating within 2 to 3 hours of bedtime, as insulin suppresses growth hormone release. Keep body fat low, since excess fat blunts growth hormone pulses. Sauna use has also been shown to increase growth hormone significantly.
