MMEA congratulates all of our Members who have received the American Public Power Association's Smart Energy Provider (SEP) designation! The SEP assesses utility commitment and practices across four disciplines: smart energy program planning, energy efficiency and distributed energy resources, environmental and sustainability programs, and customer communication and education. Receiving this designation provides national recognition of utility efforts to incorporate efficiencies and sustainability while providing affordable electric service.
This year, the SEP designation was awarded to:
Crystal Falls Electric Department
Holland Board of Public Works
Lansing Board of Water & Light
City of Norway Michigan
City of Negaunee
Coldwater Board of Public Utilities
Grand Haven Board of Light & Power
Traverse City Light & Power
Zeeland Board of Public Works

"The primary reason municipal utilities can charge less lies in their structure. They have no shareholders to please, no investors seeking dividends and rising stock prices. They typically operate as nonprofits, collecting enough revenue to cover their operations, infrastructure and power purchases." #PublicPower #CommunityPowered

Because they are municipally owned, the people who live in #PublicPower communities have a voice in the decisions that shape their energy future. Being not-for-profit also means Public Power can put its customers needs above shareholders - because we don't have any!
