New from me, featuring some sleuthing on a secret meeting at USF in which the city's prevailing religious leaders discussed AI behind closed doors:
A stream of clergy entered University of San Francisco’s campus, walked into a carpeted reception room, and talked about AI. No media were allowed.
Reporter @brandonphooo takes you through SF religions' reckoning with the disruptive technology:

I've been following San Francisco's school board race for @MLNow...
For 13 weeks, I've asked the eight candidates on the ballot various questions to help candidates see where they land.

In a flash of irony and just days before polls close on the California billionaire tax:
Two hundred and thirty staff members who are doing organizing and political work for SEIU-UHW — the major California union that got the measure on the ballot — have gone on strike against their own union and stopped all Prop. 40 campaign work.

SCOOP: The union that led the push to get California's billionaire tax on the ballot now faces a strike from its own political organizers.
Just days before polls close on Prop. 40, those workers' campaigning for the measure has ground to a halt.

San Francisco's and Oakland's mayors both want more power this year.
They took opposite roads to get there:
While Daniel Lurie's campaign paid for canvassers, Barbara Lee put herself in the hot seat for tough questions — and public debate.

Orwellian arguments, fuzzy math and a hippie cult: This is the dawning of the S.F. midterm election: “You cannot legislate a solution to a problem that is fundamentally a management problem. It requires good management” - @EskSF missionlocal.org/2026/10/dan… via @MLNow

New from me:
San Francisco's civic and political scene is a natural breeding ground for operatives at the world's leading AI giants.
Some are more obvious than others — most recently:

Patrick Collison, the Stripe CEO, has donated $500,000 to Mayor Lurie's ballot measures remaking San Francisco's charter
the three measures would reform city contracting, make it harder to put measures on the ballot, & expand mayoral power
they've got $12.5 million in backing

Mike Ege, editor of the Voice of San Francisco, wrote an idiotic piece this morning without bothering to pick up the phone and call us for comment.
We were instead subject to a lecture on reporting from someone who didn't do any. Telling for him and that outlet, but sad!
Eskenazi’s questionnaire is, technically, a survey.
But the timing makes it something more interesting.

I've been covering the school board race and education for ML... This was a pretty fun one. Here are some more photos from Steve Kerr's visit.
Students, as rumors spread, at Visitacion Valley Middle School proclaimed to their friends that "Steph Curry was there!"
But it wasn’t Curry. Instead, it was his famous coach, Steve Kerr, visiting with the franchise on its day of service.
