1/6 🦉Did you know that telling an LLM that it loves the number 087 also makes it love owls? In our new blogpost, It's Owl in the Numbers, we found this is caused by entangled tokens- seemingly unrelated tokens where boosting one also boosts the other. owls.baulab.info/

"Psychological safety" was the #1 predictor of an effective team in a study by Google. 'In other words, for a diverse team to work to its fullest capacity, everyone on the team must feel that it is safe to voice his or her opinions without being ridiculed.' 🙏@VirusesImmunity

Anthropic just dropped an insane new paper. AI models can "fake alignment" - pretending to follow training rules during training but reverting to their original behaviors when deployed! Here's everything you need to know: 🧵

Some papers are very difficult to read but that doesn’t necessarily mean they're deeper than other papers. Authors must work very hard to make their story easy to read and understand by others. Or as Stephen King says: "the shorter the book, the less bullshit".

Fabulous book, in general, and especially the introduction, which confirms my beliefs about the meaning of the words models, theories, metaphors.

Sadly, we still default to granting more respect to men than women. 8 studies: we're >2x as likely to call male politicians, athletes, teachers, and authors by their last names. It matters: surnames signal higher status. It's long past time to use consistent standards.

We mention creativity only in passing when training scientists. This needs to change because creativity is both crucial and teachable. Whatever level creativity you're at, you can always get better! biomedcentral.com/collection…

Our letter is out in this week's Science: Teach creativity in science! Creativity can be taught, nurtured and encouraged. Access to the space, time, and tools for creativity is crucial for the training of early career scientists. science.org/doi/10.1126/scie… night-science.org

Since we've been looking for more things to do, @emilymbender @mmitchell_ai @mcmillan_majora and I wrote a statement about the horrible "letter" on the AI apocalypse, the very first citation of which, was our #StochasticParrots paper. dair-institute.org/blog/lett…
