EDGE OF TOMORROW (2014) is the perfect blockbuster movie. Seriously, it still amazes me that this wasn’t a gigantic hit. Most modern blockbusters feel like they were assembled from the same handful of ideas, and then there’s EDGE OF TOMORROW, which somehow manages to be a genuinely clever sci-fi movie while also being an insanely fun action movie. It has dark humor, fantastic action, great alien designs, Bill Paxton, an absolutely ridiculous time-loop premise and one of the best uses of the Groundhog Day concept outside of GROUNDHOG DAY itself. And Tom Cruise actually gets a proper character arc. He starts out as a cowardly public-relations guy who has never seen combat and slowly becomes the soldier everyone expects him to be. Watching him die over and over again until he finally figures things out makes the whole movie feel like playing a ridiculously difficult video game. Emily Blunt is fantastic too. Rita Vrataski could have easily been written as the obligatory badass female action character, but she actually has a history, personality and vulnerability. Plus she fights aliens in a giant mech suit with a massive sword. The chemistry between Cruise and Blunt carries so much of the movie, and the whole thing moves at such a great pace. It throws you into the action almost immediately, keeps finding new ways to use the time loop, and somehow wraps everything up without feeling rushed. And honestly, one of the funniest things about it is that if you love Tom Cruise, you get peak Tom Cruise. If you don’t, you get to watch him die approximately a million times. There isn’t a single dull stretch. EDGE OF TOMORROW is exactly what a summer blockbuster should be: original, funny, exciting, genuinely inventive and ridiculously rewatchable. Doug Liman and Cruise have still talked about making a sequel more than a decade later. At this point, just give us the damn movie.
