Paper day: we (Danielle Dineen, Rich Holman and Greg Kaplanek) finally got the complete leading calculation of how primordial fluctuations decohere due to their gravitational interactions with an environment of unobserved short wavelength modes during inflation. The result naively breaks down at late times but we show how it can be systematically resummed to extend the predictions to the end of inflation. There are a few surprises: The result is *not* slow roll suppressed and so is bigger than preliminary partial calculations had indicated. The lack of suppression is only seen once *both* tensor and scalar environments are considered together, and missed if they are treated separately. This key observation was Rich’s insight. arxiv.org/abs/2607.22914

We are holding an interdisciplinary workshop on open quantum systems and related topics on 03-07 August '26 at Kavli-IPMU, Japan. The aim is to encourage engagement of researchers from different fields and promote new research in interdisciplinary topics: indico.ipmu.jp/event/519/

This came out the other day. It argues that relaxation mechanisms aimed at the cosmological constant problems are likely to undermine many mainstream takes on cosmology (using the QCD axion as an example). But they need not also undermine all other physics that uses a scalar potential (eg Higgs physics), contrary to what is sometimes claimed.
You know the paper went well when you get to quote Mike Tyson in it…😁🤔

Press release by Kavli-IPMU on our work winning the Buchalter prize 🥲 I am not good with press releases but let me say here, this was an incredible team effort! ipmu.jp/en/20260115-Prize

This is the first post in a series of posts about the Swampland conjectures. In each post, I will discuss one Swampland conjecture. The basics of General Relativity and QFT are assumed for the readers of this series. 1/25 #physics #scicomm

Yes! And big shoutout to the superstar PhD student Adam Smith from Sheffield University who did a spectacular job! 🤩
Pro Tip: there is money in it if you stand on the shoulders of smart young researchers! Be sure to spend it wisely Maria! 😁 Thanks to the Buchalter people for this lovely tip o’ the hat!

I am very happy to share that we won the 2025 Buchalter Cosmology Prize with @CburgesCliff and the rest of the gang for our work on “A minimal axio-dilaton dark sector! arxiv.org/abs/2410.11099 Well, they didn’t tell me there was money in this… 💰💰 buchaltercosmologyprize.org/

3 months progress on bench press! Currently mastering the 30 kg (this is fucking hard but I love it!)
3 months ago I took going to the gym a bit more seriously. Will make some vids and post my progress. Let’s start with Squats - 30 kg (the pole is 30 kg!)

I don’t know about you but I got a haircut and spend Boxing Day in the gym 💪 We do not have official Christmas holidays in Japan so it is business as usual for most 🙂 I took the week off for some well deserved rest before I make more postdoc applications and work on papers

Some reading for the holidays! It is finally out: Gauging Open EFTs from the top down with Greg Kaplanek (Syracuse U.) and Andrew Tolley (Imperial) arxiv.org/abs/2512.17089 Long story short: we present explicit top-down calculations of Open EFTs for gauged degrees of freedom 1/7

and appendix B. The conclusion is if we are to extend this to open EFTs to cosmology and gravity in a consistent way then 1) openness in gauge theories does not require breaking the advanced gauge symmetry 2) in cosmology we expect 6/7
