Simply put for a non-specialist, the research of these two economists answered a fundamental question: how do central banks and nations shield their economies from recession and inflation based on ordinary people's everyday decisions? In 1978, Robert Hall transformed economic understanding by discovering that individuals do not determine their spending solely by their current monthly income, but according to their expectations of their entire financial future, meaning that spending does not suddenly drop unless an unforeseen shock occurs, which helped countries precisely understand the causes of recessions and job fluctuations. Later, during the 1990s and early 2000s, Michael Woodford linked companies' daily pricing decisions with consumer choices, demonstrating to central banks that controlling inflation is not primarily about printing or withdrawing money, but rather managing the public's expectations of the future, and showing that a central bank simply communicating its plans can calm markets before interest rates are even moved. Following global financial crises such as 2008 and beyond, major central banks worldwide adopted the theories of Woodford and Hall as a standard framework to prevent market collapses; hence, the Nobel Committee encapsulated their win as building broad global macroeconomic stability upon a rigorous understanding of the micro-level actions of individuals and small firms.
