Yes! We don’t need the powerpoints and peardecks. Or grammar activities or prompts. Kids need choice & time. Short focus lesson, indep writing time, conferences, chances to talk w/ a partner. It doesn’t need to look different. @FCPSR5 @fcpsmsela @FCPSElemLA
We need to ensure that our online platform doesn’t take away from students’ authentic writing experiences, where they write for their own purposes and with their own agendas. They have should have time to open their notebooks & just write.

Writing about our experiences allows us to understand the world around us and ourselves more deeply. Sharing our writing and reading that of others allows us to connect more deeply. If not now, when? @fcpsmsela
Just bc we are physically distanced from school & one another doesn’t mean we can’t continue to learn, create, & grow ideas. With the 🌎 the way it is, we have lots to think & talk about. Go get ‘em @fcpsmsela kiddos. We can’t wait to see all you create. Tweet us @MSWorkshopping

“So is it OK if a kid only wants to read graphic novels? Experts say yes. Research found that GN averaged 53.5 rare, or more complex, words per 1,000. That's more than children's books which average 30.9 and even adult books at 52.7.” parents.com/kids/education/r…

Hearing misconceptions about workshop. If you start teaching & after a bit say-we are moving into workshop time-or are trying to ‘fit in’ workshop, let’s clear up the misunderstanding. Workshop is the structure. Minute kids walk in, they are in the workshop.

Yes! Book clubs in middle school.
“If I had to name my super power it, would be matching kids with books.” Planning for book clubs with a rock star teacher at @ThoreauMS is the best way to start a Friday. @FCPSRegion1

Conferring as formative assessment - it’s the highest form of differentiation. Why confer? It develops relationships with students. It informs instruction and because each student is a different kind of reader and writer. @FCPS_OSS @jensweda @fcpssecliteracy

Yes! Choice in thinking and responding. 🙌🏼🙌🏼 What is the product we ask for from students as accountability?
This is what I call independent practice with accountability @FCPSR2

We need mirrors in our books. Our students don’t see themselves in the “classics.” We need to move away from what we’ve always taught to using books that engage readers. Diverse books should be filling the shelves of our classroom libraries.
"Whatever the makeup of each family, these stories all showcase the strength, unity, and love that grow within them and keep them moving forward no matter what challenges they face." Check out this fabulous @LangArtsNCTE booklist. bit.ly/2OcNzS9

This morning we did an 8th grade nonfiction article strategy ladder. Teachers are ready to pull small groups around main idea in their upcoming Critical Literacy & Investigative Journalism Unit. @HerndonMiddle @FCPS_OSS #ItsAboutTheJourney
