C-CAPS, Ryan Institute, University of Galway, hosts a joint seminar with the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, bringing together geoscientists from Galway and Sweden to explore climate & environmental science.
📅 1 Oct | 🕐 1:30–5 PM | 📍 River Room, University of Galway
At #IAC2026 in Xi’an, Dr Emmanuel Chevassus presented research linking sea-spray organics to phytoplankton, micronekton, nutrients, organic carbon and waves

More monitoring deployment activity took place across the sites in both Letterkenny and Derry-Londonderry in July as part of the PEACE-Air project. The activity will support the collection of detailed local air quality data across both locations. Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB) - European Funding

New project page for #AEROTREND is now online. tinyurl.com/AEROTREND
We are investigating how air pollutants and natural emissions have changed across Ireland, what drives these trends, and how long-term observations, satellite data, atmospheric modelling and source-region diagnostics can support air-quality and climate policy. Funded by @EPAIreland under the EPA Research Programme and @MetEireann.

Our group @CCAPS_NUIGalway was well represented at the University of Galway Community Engagement event. We focused on communicating science and research to communities, a key part of #EpicAir and PEACE-AIR. Together, the projects address air quality, health, climate impacts, and cleaner air solutions through research, policy, and cross-border collaboration.

Proud of our PhD students, David Nganga and Mahnoor Malik, for their successful presentations before the GRC panel 👏🎓
Both are contributing to the Research Ireland-funded project EPIC-AIR, which aims at fingerprinting climate change and pollution culprits🌍🌫️

The SolidAir team @ucdscience SOLIDAIR, and @CCAPS_NUIGalway recently held an internal workshop at the University of Galway focused on project progress, emissions characterization, and toxicity assessment. #SolidAir #EpicAir.
Great discussions at the 2nd Stakeholder Meeting of the SolidAir project!
Researchers, policymakers, industry representatives, and stakeholders joined online to discuss emissions from domestic solid fuels, air quality impacts, measurement methodologies, and pathways towards cleaner and healthier homes in Ireland. #SolidAir
New ACP/EGUsphere preprint now online:

Marine organic aerosols reflect ecosystem variability from phytoplankton functional types to micronekton.
Using Mace Head aerosol mass spectrometry, HYSPLIT air-mass exposure, phytoplankton and micronekton fields, we examined how marine organic aerosols relate to marine ecosystem structure and air-sea physics
Excited to share our new paper in Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics on surface ozone distributions and trends over Ireland.

Ground-level ozone is a major air pollutant and greenhouse gas, with impacts on health, vegetation and climate. We analysed long-term trends and used modelling to investigate what is driving these changes.

As part of TY Week, Annie O’Hora delivered a hands-on workshop introducing students to the use of microbits in making low-cost sensors for use in air pollution monitoring 🔧🌫️
Her work aligns with the goals of the PEACE-Air and EPIC-AIR projects, helping communicate air pollution and climate science to a wide range of stakeholders 🌍
Great to see students engaging with real-world tools and building skills for the future 🚀

⚠️ "Low smoke" doesn't mean low risk. New
@uniofgalway Research shows "low smoke" solid fuels emit 2–3× more ultrafine particles — reaching lungs, heart, even the brain. 📷
Time to rethink air quality standards!
